    Extractions: Benson Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Benson was a descendant of a family that had settled in Salem during the Revolutionary era and had prospered in the maritime trade. He grew up in privileged circumstances, engaging in sporting activities of tennis, fishing, and hunting, which he enjoyed for the rest of his life. A member of the Ten American Painters and an important figure in the Boston School, Frank W. Benson was one of the first American artists to combine the figure with the Impressionist landscape. His images of women and children in sunlit meadows and hillsides established Impressionism as a major style of painting in America. These works are among the most beloved American Impressionist canvases today

Benson T he sporting art of Frank Benson (1862-1951), one of America's leading Impressionists of the early twentieth century, will be featured in a new exhibit, "Impressions of Nature: The Wildfowl Art of Frank W. Benson," opening at the University of Minnesota's Bell Museum of Natural History, Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999. Widely known for his landscapes and portraits of prominent New Englanders, Frank W. Benson was also a passionate naturalist with an intense interest in waterfowl and hunting. A native of Salem, Mass., Benson was formally trained at the Paris-based Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Academie Julian and was a founding member of the Boston School of Fine Arts, where he taught throughout his life. In the Impressionist tradition, Benson often painted outdoors, experimenting with light and color in his paintings of landscapes and people engaged in everyday events. After earning a comfortable living as one of America's most sought-after portrait artists, Benson made a mid-career change to pursue his love of wildlife. Between 1915 and 1940, Benson created hundreds of paintings and etchings depicting outdoor life in Cape Cod, Canada and New England.

Benson brilliantly captured the effects of light on the physical world. Benson's virtuosity with light in all its manifestations will be the focus of a major exhibition opening at the Peabody Essex Museum September 29, 2000. Frank W. Benson: American Impressionist will showcase the breadth and depth of this important American painter. The exhibition is sponsored by Sovereign Bank New England and runs through February 18, 2001. "An exhibition like this one is long overdue," says Faith Andrews Bedford , Benson's great-granddaughter and biographer, and co-curator for this exhibition. "Benson's use of light was so superb in all media and motifs." Benson (1862-1951) came from a prosperous Salem, Massachusetts family and was later trained at the Academie Julian in Paris. Deeply influenced by seventeenth-century masters such as Vermeer and Velazquez, he became a leader of an important group of painters known as the Boston School. He is one of the supreme beings in the etching of waterfowl, whether in tidal flats, marshes, ponds, or flight. No other artist has approached him in the ability to capture wild fowl with etching needle and the copper plate. Benson took up etching when he was 50 years old and designed the second Duck Stamp for the United States Department of Interior when he was 73 years old. He had almost immediate financial success as an etcher. His personal profit from the sale of etchings had averaged about $80,000. a year, before the economic depression. Affectionately known as the "Dean of American Etchers," he needled over 300 plates and was a member of the National Academy and Society of American Etchers. He hunted grouse and woodcock and fished for salmon and trout in New England and eastern Canada. He painted and etched what he observed first-hand. so his renderings vividly capture the action. This is a gorgeous book that features full color oil and watercolor sporting paintings showing waterfowl and upland bird scenes, along with salmon and trout fishing paintings. Benson was also famous for his etchings and dry points. This book contains reproductions of many of them.
