    Extractions: When one studies the watercolor Old Tom [Fig. 5] and the etching that was done three years later [Fig. 6], it is clear that the etching is not so much a copy of the painting as an interpretation. In comparing the two images, one notices that Tom is closer to the viewer in the painting than in the etching. Small elements of the landscape have been changed: a tuft of grass in the watercolor becomes a grass-topped dune in the etching and a thin line of ocean and bare sky behind the figure is added. In the watercolor, the band of ocean is deeper and the sky is full of geese.

    Extractions: Benson's most impressionistic work was done between 1895 and 1910. The sun-filled plein air paintings of his daughters in their gauzy summer frocks depict idealized young creatures in a carefree world. In 1897, Benson, Tarbell, and fellow Bostonian Joseph de Camp left the increasingly conservative Society of American Painters and helped found the Ten American Painters. The Ten was a stylistically heterogeneous group, but all were to some degree touched by the impressionism of the age and moved to exhibit in a more intimate environment than the Salon system offered. They continued to exhibit together for more than twenty years, and eight of their number are represented in the current show. After 1915, Benson began to devote much of his attention to printmaking. An avid sportsman, he created etchings of waterfowl and duck hunting which were influenced by the bold asymmetry of Japanese paints. Still Life is a late work (about 1926) strongly designed and richly painted. It is a large canvas with a complex but strongly unified arrangement of objects, which as the catalogue remarks, "recall the grandeur of old-master paintings."

    Extractions: B enson is known for his paintings, etchings, and watercolors of sporting subjects, especially fishing and hunting, which he rendered in the later portion of his career. His Man with a Gaff etching, depicting a man fishing, is displayed in the National Art Museum of Sport. Born in Salem, Mass., Benson grew up in privileged circumstances, engaging in tennis, fishing, and hunting. He enjoyed these activities throughout his life. In 1888 he was married to Ellen Peirson, a childhood friend. The couple settled in Salem and had four children, Eleanor, Elizabeth, George, and Sylvia. Benson received his first art training at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, from 1880-1883. In 1883, Benson traveled to Paris and continued his studies at the Academie Julian under the instruction of Gustave Boulanger and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre. He returned home in 1885 and rented a studio in Salem, Mass., and began to exhibit at the Boston Art Club and the National Academy of Design in New York. In 1898, Benson joined a number of painters from New York and Boston, including Edmund Tarbell, Robert Reid, Edward Simmons, Thomas Dewing, Childe Hassam, J. Alden Weir, and John H. Twachtman, to form the Ten American Painters. This group, which broke away from the Society of American Artists, consisted of several of the most advanced and talented artists of the era, many of whom were working in the French Impressionist style.
