   Extractions: English painter and writer. He was the younger son of Sir Robert Perret Collier (later Lord Monkswell), a distinguished lawyer and MP, and was educated at Eton. After being introduced to Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, he studied at the Slade School of Art, London, under Edward Poynter, moved to Paris where he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens and then went to Munich. Collier sent a steady stream of portraits and subject pictures to the Royal Academy from 1870 until the end of his life. As a portrait painter he emulated the mature work of John Everett Millais, but his glowering statesmen and confident captains of industry are reminiscent more of the dourness of Frank Holl's portraits. Collier also revealed a much lighter side, especially in his theatrical portraits. The best of these is Herbert Beerbohm Tree Ellen Terry and Madge Kendal in 'The Merry Wives of Windsor' (1904; London, Garrick Club), which evokes the gaiety and lavish exuberance of the Edwardian stage. His artistic training was at the Slade under Poynter , then in Paris and Munich. He also benefited from knowing Millais and Alma Tadema . Collier became a popular portrait painter of the upper classes, and also painted dramatic scenes where the viewer had to guess what was going on. As well, he painted classical genre to a high standard. Collier's first wife, Marian, was a daughter of Professor Huxley, and herself a painter. Unfortunately she died young. Among his more theatrical pictures are Mariage de Convenance at the art gallery in Merthyr Tydfil, Sentence of Death at Wolverhampton Art Gallery , and Vendetta at the Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead. His most ambitious mythological picture is In the Venusburg (Tannhauser) (1901) in the Atkinson Art Gallery, Sefton. A Lady Godiva is at the Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry

   Extractions: About the painting: Clytaemnestra was the daughter of Leda and King Tyndareaus. Her first husband, Tantalus, the King of Pisa, was killed during the course of Agamemnon's attack upon his kingdom. Agamemnon (the leader of the Greek forces during the Trojan War) took Clytaemnestra as his wife and killed her brothers, the Dioscuri, when they came to rescue her. When Agamemnon sailed for Troy, he left Clytaemnestra behind plotting her evil revenge. Upon his return, she pretended to welcome him, and then lured him into a trap. She cast a net upon him and beheaded him with an axe.

After being introduced by his father to Alma-Tadema , he studied under Poynter at the Slade School of Art. He then studied under Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris and also Munich. Lady Godiva (c.1898, Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry) is his most familiar work to the audience of today. But his contemporary fame rested on 'problem pictures' such as the Prodigal Daughter (exh. RA 1903, Usher Art Gallery, Lincoln) and The Fallen Idol (exh. RA 1913, City Art Gallery, Auckland). These recorded the psychological dramas of upper-class life, a subject made famous by William Quiller Orchardson. He even shared a title with the Scotsman in Mariage de Convenance (1907, Merthyr Tydfil).

Collier began his art career at the Slade School of Art in London as a pupil of Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Edward Poynter. Later he moved to Paris where he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens. After spending a few years in Munich, he returned to London where he became an active participant at the royal Academy of London from 1874 until his death in 1934. Mostly known for his fashionable portraits of socialites, Collier also produced many fine examples of pre-Raphaelite-influenced historical and mythological paintings.
