Counter-Culture Review : Evelyn De Morgan EVELYN DE MORGAN. Paintings by Evelyn De Morgan are being shown at the RussellCotesArt Gallery and Museum, London, until 20th April 1997. http://www.altculture.org/ccult/ccult39.html
Extractions: Paintings by Evelyn De Morgan are being shown at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, London, until 20th April 1997. The Gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. All of these paintings belong to the De Morgan Foundation. Evelyn Pickering awoke on her seventeenth birthday thinking she had wasted her life. " Art is eternal, but life is short..." she told her diary. "I will make up for it now, I have not a moment to lose." As a result of this most sober thinking, she made it her ambition to pursue 'eternal art', and subsequently became one of the first female students to enter the Slade School of Art. In 1875, at the age of twenty, she had sold her first work, Tobias and the Angel , and within a year began public exhibitions of her art. The critics, however, were very dismissive of it probably because she was female. Evelyn's uncle was John Roddam Spencer Stanhope, an artist who was very fond of the pre-Raphaelite style. She stayed with him in Florence, where she admired Botticelli's work. That, together with her formal training, influenced her style, which was classical and mythological. The paintings in the collection are, in my opinion, very well-painted, beautiful, and fascinating. The skin tones and folds of the clothing have been painted with great skill, characteristic of the days before colour photography made such detail (arguably) unneccessary. They make a refreshing change from modern art. Several of the paintings have subjects drawn from Greek mythology, depicting gods and goddesses in flowing robes, in victories and defeats.

Extractions: Evelyn De Morgan was born in London in 1855, the eldest child of lawyer Percival Pickering QC and niece of the Pre-Raphaelite painter John Roddam Spencer Stanhope. Evelyn began lessons with a drawing master at the age of 15, followed by prize-winning studies at South Kensington and Slade Schools; in 1875 she paid her first visit to Italy. Her exhibition debut in 1876 at the Dudley Gallery with 'St Catherine of Alexandria' was followed by an invitation to show at the Grosvenor Gallery, where she exhibited regularly. In 1887 she married William de Morgan, ceramicist and associate of William Morris, with whom she shared a deep interest in spiritualism. [Read more about their spiritualist activities and beliefs in Evelyn de Morgan: Oil Paintings From 1888 to 1901, she became a regular exhibitor at the New Gallery, establishing a reputation as an artist influenced by Burne-Jones. Her preferred subjects included sacred and allegorical figures and scenes, and legends with a moral or social message such as 'The Christian Martyr' and 'The Worship of Mammon', treated in a fashion that exploited her superior drawing skills and design sense, with striking colour and billowing draperies, often on a very large scale. From 1890-1914, for the sake of Williamâs health, the couple divided their time between Chelsea and Florence; together they devised a painting method utilising glycerine which, though too troublesome to pursue, produced the clear, bright tones they sought. Her 1902 exhibition at Leighton House was followed by a solo show at Bruton Gallery (1906) and an exhibition of 25 works at Wolverhampton Art Gallery (1907). In 1916, her horror of the war led her to mount an exhibition of 13 works for the benefit of the Red Cross. De Morgan died in London in 1919, two years after her husband. Subsequently her brother and sister made arrangements for her works to be shown permanently, first at Leighton House and then Old Battersea House; now owned by the De Morgan Foundation, they form one of the largest existing permanent collections of work by a single artist in Britain.

Extractions: Evelyn de Morgan (born Evelyn Pickering) studied at the Slade school, where she was one of the earliest female students, and then went to live in Italy for some time with her uncle, the painter Spencer Stanhope. On her return to Britain, her painting Ariadne in Naxos won great acclaim, and she established herself as a painter of symbolic pictures based on classical mythology. She married William de Morgan , the potter. Study from Life Evelyn de Morgan's work is clearly much influenced by Burne-Jones , and along with the pictures of her contemporaries Marianne Stokes Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale and Mrs Young Hunter, has much in it of the Pre-Raphaelites . However, de Morgan was also a convert to the Florentine school from her time in Italy, and she especially admired Botticelli. Her soft, fresco-like colours used in figural pictures such as Flora show this influence. Many of her pictures concentrate on just one or two figures, large on the canvas, typically placed on the landscape rather than in it. Her best pictures are the earlier classical subjects in this style. Later, she achieved a greater delicacy of colour, but her compositions became more erratic, and she went into a rapid decline before the First World War, her later pictures being most disappointing. The large Aurora Triumphans is in the Russell Cotes Museum , Bournemouth, and in London there are two highly-worked figural studies in Leighton House . Further work is at the De Morgan Foundation. A portrait by her of her husband is at the
