He was the last surviving child of John Doyle, an artist, who moved in high society. John Doyle included people like the Prince of Whales and Queen Victoria in his list of acquaintances. Charles and his brothers had artistic leanings like their father. In November of 1849 Charles left England for Edinburgh to take a position in Her Majesty's Office of Works. He hoped that the job would lead to a successful career, promotion and an eventual triumphant return to England. When Charles arrived in Edinburgh he rented a room from a widow with two daughters. One of the daughters, Mary , caught Charles's eye. In July of 1855 they were married. They would eventually have ten children. Seven of those children survived including their second child, Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle. Charles was able to supplement the income from his civil service job with money he received from paintings and book illustrations. However because of the demands of his job he was not able to devote a great deal of time to his art. He grew depressed as he was torn between the necessity to make a living and his dreams. No doubt his depression grew as he compared his lack of progress with his brothers' successes in London.

   Extractions: Watercolourist and illustrator. He was the youngest son of caricaturist John Doyle (1797-1868) and brother of Richard Doyle . He joined the Edinburgh Office of Works at the age of nineteen. Doyle painted several strange fantasies and nightmarish scenes including elves. He exhibited a number of watercolours and pen and ink studies at the Royal Scottish Academy. He illustrated John Bunyan's 'Pilgrim's Progress' and produced several illustrations for London Society (1862-4) and also for humorous books. He died of epilepsy in a lunatic asylum. His interest in the occult was inherited by his son, the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He was, by profession, a civil servant, but produced illustrations of flights of fantasy, mostly of Fairy beings, throughout his life. He published a children's book, Our Trip to Blunderland with sixty illustrations in 1877 and contributed illustrations to the Illustrated Times London Society , and The Graphic between 1858 and 1877. Victorian fairy painters and illustrators depended upon a similar supportive relationship as they conjured up "realms of faerie" for appreciative spectators. Their enthusiastic admirers included such diverse luminaries as Queen Victoria Charles Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll), William Makepeace Thackeray , Charles Dickens, John Ruskin , and Samuel Carter Hall. Fairy paintings appeared regularly in Royal Academy exhibitions throughout the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth. Most of the artists from the early Victorian period took their subjects from the plays of Shakespeare, most notably A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest , and the poetry of Milton and Spenser. They usually added imaginative details to these works culled from folklore and fairy tales. An even larger audience for fairy images emerged with the expanding readership of illustrated books and magazines after midcentury.
