Extractions: Gilbert Munger has a very, very large listing in WWW 99. but to summarize, he was born in North Madison, CT, and died in Washington, DC. He studied engraving at the age of 13, possibly from W.H. Dougal (with whom he lived in 1860). He is known as a self-taught painter. In 1877 he went to Europe and remained there for 17 years. His style during those years was transformed from the realistic one of his American years to the introspective one reflective of the Barbizon influence. In Europe he gained great fame when his "Niagara Falls" sold to the Prussian Government for $5000. Exhibited: NAD,1866,1871; San Francisco, various exhibitions; The Royal Academy in London, 1879-1882; many others, with solo exhibitions in NYC and Minnesota. His work hangs in the Tweed Mus.
