Munger began work as an engraver at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., at the young age of 14. Following service in the Civil War, Munger moved to San Francisco, where he traveled and painted in Carmel and Yosemite. From 1876-1893, Munger maintained a studio in Barbizon, France, where his works show the influence of Corot. Upon his return to the U.S., Munger lived the rest of his life in Washington, D.C., having earned fame as a classical landscape artist.

Extractions: Estimate $9000/12000 Sold At Auction This is a rare, early and particularly beautiful California canvas (1868 as it is dated) that achieves some of the lyrical qualities of the artist's eastern brethren in the luminist tradition: the tight brushstrokes in the water and sky, the horizontal composition, the endless horizon, the almost supernatural (and not yet smoggy) light. But, perhaps influenced by the considerably different light of the West Coast, the handling of the foreground also shows a very early tendency that would not have yet been called Impressionism.

In 1795 he was an overseer of highways in Carmel. By 1800 he was of Philipstown and purchased a property 1807 in (now) Putnam Valley. Gilbert Adams moved to his East Fishkill farm in the spring of 1810. His 1825 will listed 12 children, one evidently deceased with 2 minor sons. Though not mentioned in his will, his wife survived him and moved c.1833 to Delaware Co. OH where she made her will in 1841 (no g.s.) mentioning only surviving sons -no daughters or grandchildren.
