Extractions: for one of the longest-running campaigns in American advertising history. THE MOUNTIE WORE HIS HEART (and ours) on his bright red sleeve; he stood for integrity, bravery, and a whole range of Victorian virtues that had been banished from the abstract art of the modern, 20th century. The big calendars that carried these images were Northwest Paper Companys pride and joy. To promote high-quality paper to the printing trade, it was crucial to show how well it reproduced the intended colorshow well it printed. Chicago ad man Frank Cash had the answer: The red Mountie tunic and the vivid hues of the outdoor landscapes would test the printing qualities of Northwest paper to its limits. The heroic male figure would appeal to the jobbers and printers; theirs was, in the 1930s, strictly a mans world. LOOKING NORTH features 140 color illustrations by Arnold Friberg, Hal Foster, and 13 other artists who created these stunning story-ads for the Northwest Paper Company in Cloquet, Minnesota, between 1931 and 1970.

Extractions: Mostly limited to artists born before 1900. A list of approximately 175 artists whose artwork depicts Mount Shasta, but does not include photographers. This is an ongoing list updated as of December 1991. Compiled from various sources including auction records, exhibition catalogs, art books, art gallery exhibitions, private collections, etc. Note that Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885), traveling southward as naturalist with the 1841 Wilkes-Emmons overland expedition, lost his sketching materials while crossing the Umpqua Mountains in southern Oregon. No depiction of Mount Shasta by Peale is known to exist. Thus only his fellow expedition members, the world-reknowned geologist James Dwight Dana and the official expedition artist Alfred Thomas Agate, both of whom did sketch Mount Shasta, share the honor of creating the earliest bona-fide pictures of Mount Shasta. Titian Peale, because of his stature as an American artist and his presence at Mount Shasta in 1841, is included in the following list. Adam, William (1846-1931);

Extractions: Location M1A 3.2 Hazel Munger Burke was born February 3 1900 and died May 16, 1989. She studied piano from an early age, but was unable to continue with more advanced study. She graduated from Cathedral High School in Rochester with a major in business and was subsequently employed as a secretary. She married Henry J. Burke, D.D.S. in 1925. She performed professionally as an accompanist for the Miles Ensign and Jack McDonald School of the Dance in Rochester during the 1930's and 1940's. The collection was compiled by Hazel Munger Burke, a resident of Rochester New York and avid amateur musician. Thomas Burke, son of Hazel, received the collection upon his mother's death, donating it to Sibley Music Library in May 1995, shortly after his retirement to Rochester. The collection represents a very fine private "piano bench" collection of popular sheet music of the first half of the twentieth century. It is very representative of the tastes of the era and the includes a typical selection of a variety of vocal and instrumental music. A area of particular interest is its holdings from the time of World War I and the 1920's. Piano rags and dances are also prominent. The collection gives a good insight into the musical tastes of the time as selected by a very capable amateur musician.

Extractions: Desolation Thy Name is The Great Basin: Clarence King's Fortieth Parallel Survey by William H. Goetzmann University of Texas at Austin A version of this paper is forthcoming in: Perpetual Mirage: The Arid West in Photographic Books and Prints Whitney Museum Exhibition Catalogue, 1996. Timothy O'Sullivan (1840-1882) was the earliest photographer of the real "Great American Desert". On two great post-Civil War Surveys of the arid West, O'Sullivan, with his mule powered ambulance and large wet plate camera, photographed the vast empty wastes of the Great Basin, Death Valley, the lower Grand Canyon, the Wasatch Range and the Uintas. He breathed the dust, drank the alkali water of desert pools, hobnobbed with miners in the underground landscapes of the Comstock Lode and nearly died of starvation and exposure in America's grandest canyon. His photographs much admired for their surrealistic, abstract qualities today reflected his own direct experience of these desolate lands, not some promoter of the photographic picturesque. O'Sullivan began his western labors with Clarence King's United States Geological Survey of the Fortieth Parallel in 1867. King, a veteran of the earlier California Geological Survey, had scaled the Sierras and mapped and geologized what he called "the top of California". He became well-known in both literary and scientific circles as a bon vivant, a splendid writer, a connoisseur of the arts and a flamboyant adventurer. He also had a distinct talent for science, honed at the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale. So bright and so well-connected was he that at the termination of the California Surveys, Sec. of War Edwin Stanton made him director of the Fortieth Parallel Surveys a much coveted assignment.
