   Extractions: For much of his artistic life, Sir Edward Poynter, the neo-classical painter, lived under the shadow of Lord Leighton , and as a result his work was unjustly neglected. Furthermore, his talents never quite matched those of Leighton and Alma-Tadema , even though at times he could be a superb artist, as with his Cave of the Storm Nymphs , which is one of his finest academic paintings. It was bought in 1891 for £203,500, one of the most expensive Victorian pictures ever sold at that time. Unlike Leighton, whose flamboyant lifestyle matched his outgoing personality, Poynter was a reserved, cantankerous man who was unable to change with the times, with the result that his work was dismissed as prententious and uninteresting. When Leighton died, Poynter took over the role of President of the Royal Academy, where he remained for over twenty-two years, until many people began to wonder if he would ever retire. He resigned finally when he was over 80, but only because he was almost blind. Edward Poynter was born in Paris, the son of an architect, and after being educated at Westminster and Ipswich Grammar School, he went to Rome, where he met Leighton. Having decided to take up art as a career, as a direct result of meeting Leighton, he studied in Paris under Gleyre, who had been a penniless artist before he opened an atelier, when he rapidly became a famous teacher.

   Extractions: The Catapult , from an engraving of 1896 E. J. Poynter, last of the Victorian Classical painters , was born in Paris, his father Ambrose Poynter being an architect and landscape painter. He studied under W. C. T. Dobson, afterwards at the RA Schools, and then returned to Paris, working under Charles Gleyre at the same time as Alma Tadema , Whistler and Du Maurier. He was very much part of the British establishment thereafter, becoming ARA in 1868, first Slade Professor of University College London 1871-5, RA in 1877 and Director of the National Gallery 1894-1904. In 1896, Poynter was elected President of the Royal Academy , narrowly beating Briton Riviere to the post, and he seems to have got the job because of his very wide teaching, lecturing and administrative experience and depth of scholarship. Poynter's term as PRA came after Millais 's brief occupation of the post, and follows rather from his predecessor Leighton , who was PRA for nearly two decades. It had been Leighton who, in 1854, originally persuaded Poynter, then painting only landscapes, to turn to figure studies, and he helped the younger man with drapery studies. Like Leighton, Poynter studied abroad, trained as an academic artist, and was a superior draughtsman, technically masterful, working on largely ideal Greek-style pictures. Again like Leighton, Poynter was enormously influential, though in his case it was because of his large number of official positions and teaching posts. He was created a baronet in 1902 - only Leighton was made a Lord for being PRA.

Before the Norman Conquest the Welsh principality of Powis, comprising the county of Montgomery and part of the counties of Brecknock, Radnor, Shropshire, Merioneth and Denbigh, was subject to the princes of North Wales. Early in the 12th century it was divided into upper and lower Powis. In 1283 Owen ap Griffin, prince of upper Powis, formally resigned his princely title (nomen et circulum principatus) and his lands to the English king Edward I. at Shrewsbury, and received the lands again as an English barony. (See Monigomeryshire Collections, 1868, vol. i.). This barony of Powis passed through female inheritance to the family of Cherleton and in 1421 to that of Grey. It fell into abeyance in 1551. In 1587 Sir Edward Herbert (d. 1594), a younger son of William Herbert, earl of Pembroke, purchased some of the lands of the barony, including Red castle, afterwards Powis castle, near Welshpool, and in 1629 his son William (c. 1573—1656) was created Baron Powis. William’s grandson, William, the 3rd baron (c. 1629—1696), was created earl of Powis ill 1674 and Viscount Montgomery and marquess of Powis in 1687. The recognized head of the Roman Catholic aristocracy in England, Powis was suspected of complicity in some of the popish plots and was imprisoned in the Tower of London from 1678 to 1684. He followed James II. into exile and was created duke of Powis by the dethroned king. The English government deprived him of his estates, but these were restored to his son William, the 2nd marquess, in 1722. William, who had a somewhat chequered career as a Jacobite, died in October 1745, and when his son William, the 3rd marquess, died in 1748 the titles became extinct.

    Extractions: In the 19th century, an increasing number of Europeans made the "Grand Tour" to Mediterranean lands. There was a great popular interest in the region's ancient ruins and exotic cultures, and this interest fuelled the rise of Classicism in Britain, and Orientalism , which was mostly centered in continental Europe. The Classicists were closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites , many artists being influenced by both styles to one degree or another. Both movements were highly romantic and were inspired by similar historical and mythological themes the key distinction being that the Classicists embodied the rigid Academic standards of painting, while the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was initially formed as a rebellion against those same standards.
