Marshall and at the Academy of design, where he began to exhibit in 1878. In 1877, 1882, and 1887 he went abroad, visiting London and Paris. and traveling in Holland, Italy, Spain, and Germany. His paintings are notable rather for color and effect than for form, and he might be classed as a representative of the impressionist school in this country. Among his works are "Wandering Cow," "Curfew Hour," "Pegasus," "Farm-Yard," "The Waste of Waters is their Field" "Little Maid of Arcady" " Temple of the Mind," and "Phantom Ship."     Extractions: Ryder began drawing when he was four years old . His education did not continue long because of poor eyesight He learned painting from local amateurs. But he was not satisfied with the results: "In my desire to be accurate I became lost in a maze of detail. Try as I would, my colors were not those of nature. My leaves were infinitely below the standard of a leaf, my finest strokes were coarse and crude." He lived the life of a recluse in a small studio. He was always happy to see friends but had no desire to meet anyone new. He wrote poetry and took long walks. He had no interest in material things, comfort or money. His studio contained empty cereal packages piled to the ceiling, a richly carved wedding chest, a Greek head standing on a board with a foot bath on one side and a box of hay on the other. Sometimes he worked for 48 hours without sleep or food (Siegfried and the Rhine Maidens).

    Extractions: I couldn't find much information about the artist Ryder on the Internet and thought that a shame because he was a great individual, a private thinker, a quiet poet, and one of the most important American painters to transition into the Twentieth Century. When I was young (forty years ago) and it was easy to study art at the old Smithsonian Castle, they had a large collection of Albert Pinkham Ryder's paintings exhibited, hanging on rather shabby jute covered partitions in a unpretentious way. Some of the paintings were hung cockeyed, no one really cared if you touched them. Of course security was much different then. But had someone wanted to take one off the wall and carry it out the door, well, it seemed like that wouldn't be difficult at all. But most people weren't really thinking the way they do today. The Ryder collection was just there for the public to muse. Few did, but back then there were no massive loads of tourists descending upon the Mall. The casualness of it all seemed so fantastic to me, to find those paintings there in such a conglomeration of unrelated stuff. I'm not sure where those paintings are today but in my many trips back to the Smithsonian I haven't seen one of them. My guess is the rest of them are somewhere in the dark vaults down below the museum. If I'm correct, that's too bad - Ryder's work should be seen."TOILERS OF THE SEA," which is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is only one of about 160 paintings he did.

    Extractions: Self-taught American artist. Rejected by the National Academy of Design at twenty, he trained with a minor artist, William Edgar Marshall, and was then admitted. Travelled in Europe in 1877, 1882, 1887 and 1896. A visionary painter, he chose subjects from Shakespeare, Byron, Poe and Wagner. He painted some 170 pictures, many of small dimensions, and is considered one of the pioneering figures in American art. Sadly, much of Ryder's work has not survived because the unstable and unconventional materials he frequently employed deteriorated.
