Book Description
A collection of classic comic strips from a master of American comics and art.

Out of print for a decade, this new edition (with newly designed covers) of The Comic Strip Art of Lyonel Feininger features one of the ten cartooning greats featured in the historic "Masters of American Comics" show produced by the Los Angeles Hammer Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art and currently traveling across the country. It is the only complete collection of the legendary comic strips of one of the medium's all-time greatest artists. Known worldwide for his accomplishments as a painter, Feininger began his career as a cartoonist, producing—all too briefly—two beautifully ambitious comic strips for the Chicago Sunday Tribune in 1906: The Kin-Der-Kids and Wee Willie Winkie's World, both of which remain high points in the history of strip cartooning. The Kin-Der-Kids is a rollicking comic opera of the ludicrous exploits of a group of young adventurers as they set off around the world in their bathtub with the oppressive Auntie Jim-Jam in hot pursuit. Wee Willie Winkie's World is a Little Nemo-esque visual tour-de-force of a little boy's charming fantasy world. Long considered an equal of Winsor McCay and George Herriman, Feininger's place in strip history is cemented with this beautiful, full-color, oversized collection, edited and featuring an introduction by historian Bill Blackbeard (Krazy & Ignatz). ... Book Description

This monograph presents the renowned Loebermann collectionin its entirety, featuring more than 300 of Lyonel Feininger's graphicworks and offering a generous cross-section of the artist's oeuvre.

Associated with the Die Bruecke and Bauhaus movements of early twentiethcentury, Feininger emigrated to America during World War II, where hepainted the subjects he admired most: images of the urban world; the beautyand power of the trains; paddle steamboats, schooners and yachts makingtheir way up the Hudson River. Architect and art collector HaraldLoebermann was drawn to the structural ingenuity of Feininger's drawingsand paintings. His collection of Feininger's graphic work is published herein its entirety for the first time.

Presented chronologically and in a simple classical format, the worksare enhanced by quotations from Feininger himself, along with criticalcommentary. Through these folios and with the aid of the essays'appreciation of the artist, readers can discover Feininger's works forthemselves, and study the development of an artist who depicted the beautyof modern life in line and paint.

5-0 out of 5 stars intimateknowledge of the Bauhaus...
I have refered to this book a lot over the years. If you don't like the man's work there is a lot to learn from Feiningers letters. For one Feininger, Klee and Kandinsky saw a lot of each other. They feared the technological direction of Moholy Nagy. Although the above three developed a systemized visual curricula . They believed in feeling in art! Moholy was interested in a stricter approach. Nagy didn't much care for poetics. I once discussed this with the publisher ofVision in Motion by Nagy , she said that , oh!! they were all jealous of Moholy as he was so versatile! The book includes Lyonel's discussion of his work ,his rejection for membership in the Abstract Artist's Association.Essays by his son and Alfred Barr.Like the other documentary monographs in modern art this book helps the reader learn of the development of American Art. The Stuart Davis book in this series is also valuable. ... Read more

Book Description
This expanded and updated edition of an in-demand, out-of-print title includes over 80 letters written between artists Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) and Mark Tobey (1890-1976), from the time of their first meeting in 1944 to Feininger's death in 1956. An essay by Peter Selz, entitled "Parallel Visions," offers an introduction to the artists' friendship, and a chronology further clarifies their intersecting lives. Two brief reciprocal catalogue essays--one by Feininger about Tobey, and one by Tobey about Feininger--conclude the volume. Several paintings discussed in the letters are reproduced as color plates, along with a selection of the letters themselves. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From the artists view
An insightful view from the artists themselves. Interesting perspective on galleries, other artists and shared frustrations regarding the community as a whole. Highly recommended for anyone who wants more than an academic or critical opinion of the art scene.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pleasure for anything in print about Mark Tobey.
I am a big fan of Mark Tobey (especially). Reading the correspondence lets one "get in on" the spirit of two artists at work. I wish the color reproductions were presented throughout the text instead of at the end pages. I don't know whether I would call this book "great" for a library, but I am pleased it opens a window on the artists' relationship and personal visions. ... Read more
