This exciting tour of emerging Web technologies explains what Java and XML offer for the future of the Internet. Early chapters discuss the current state of the Internet, including HTTP, followed by a quick tour of Java technologies. The authors look at database standards such as SQL (for relational databases) and the Object Data Management Group (ODMG) 2 standard (for object databases).

The most hands-on part of this title examines how to implement a Web-based database using three different technologies: Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) for programming relational databases in Java; the emerging SQLJ standard for creating "embedded" SQL within Java code; and the ODMG Java binding for manipulating object-oriented databases directly in Java. Next, the authors look at providing HTML pages on the fly using Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and Java Servlets. Further sections introduce additional Java-based technologies, such as Remote Method Invocation (RMI), Java Object Request Brokers (ORBs), JavaBeans, and Enterprise JavaBeans.

Later in the book, the authors explore the intricacies of the XML standard for structuring content within Web browsers. They also detail the Java classes that permit developers to program with XML today. The final chapter concentrates once more on the future tense, with a tour of other emerging standards and technologies. --Richard DraganBook Description

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative yet Poory organized
I bought this book to gain the fundementals of the new breed of client/server systems. The value of this book is that it argues that Java and XML will revolutionize the data interchange and data presentation. From this perspective, I think it makes it's case.

BUT, much to my amazement, I found most of the examples(code)(programming constraints) inconsequentially and almost irritatingly organized throughout the book, as it assumes you have some java programming under your belt which I do not.

There are some great points to this book.$50 is steep, but then it does manage to give you a fundemental understanding of how Java and XML may prove the most common tools in future web endeavors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good information, but ...
There's a lot of good information in here, but it really isn't all it should be. The quality of the writing is a tad erratic, chapters are padded out with long lists of methods etc which would be better consigned to anappendix.

It has feel of a book which has been thrown together in ahurry. Some of the sample programs are poorly documented and difficult tounderstand. I'm not sure the writers really knew who their target audiencewere; some of the Java text, for example, is very basic but other parts ofit are difficult, but there's not a logical step-by-step progression. Thebook is really a bit of a rag-bag. That said, there's a lot of good stuffin here, but it's hard work finding it sometimes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but doesn't live up to the title!
Had a look at it the other day at the Borders. Covers almost all the technologies associated with WEB development in a nice way with sample code that demonstrate each technology. It's a puzzle why the title is what it is. It's misleading!

1-0 out of 5 stars mainly a java book. not xml/java
xml/java combination is treated in only around 80 pages. The rest is stndard java client server, applet, servlet, JDBC etc., Buy only as a general purpose Java book and not as a XML/Java reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars I cannot reccommend this book.
I bought this book because of it's title.I also own Chang and Harkey's Java and CORBA books, which are better than this. The title is misleading. It is not until almost 400 pages into the book that XML is introduced. And the content is all too brief. Most of the book looks like cut andpastes from Chang and Harkey's other Client Server books. The book is over500 pages long, using huge fonts and page after page of example code andAPI references. It is disappointing that there is not a decent XML &Java book on the market.I guess I will have to wait and see if O'Reillypublishes one, or at least a XML in a Nutshell. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Non Fiction
The Microsoft Ole Db 2.0 Programmer's Reference and Data Access Sdk is an occasionally useful guide to using this particular piece of technology and access method, particularly when you are playing around with database servers, or were playing around with database servers at the time.

Done in the usual Microsoft reference book style.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible, if you have to write a provider, GOOD LUCK!
Please stop emailing me about books on OLE DB, I have NOT found any better books.Though, I have recently taken a decent course taught be DevelopMentor... though, I'm still not 100% clear on writing providers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful and poorly edited; not worth the price
This book is simply a bound version of the VC help on OLEDB 2.0. However, it is so lame that it does not cover any of the new Consumer templates which are included with VC6. If you already have VC6, then I would NOTreccommend this book. The Templates provided with VC6 are very powerful, but VERY poorly documented. However, this book will not remedy the problem. Also, what code examples there are(VERY few), are rarely correct in theirsyntax. In my mind, that is unacceptable in a book that is supposed to helpyou in using new, cutting-edge technology. The opnly good thing about thebook is that it does cover the data type enums and other various enumeratedtypes. This is nice, since it is difficult to find adequate help on thesetopics using the online help.

Overall, I believe this is NOT the book toget if you want to use OLEDB 2.0!

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing mess
I'm pretty new to DataBase programming, and this book is taking me nowhere. The sample code could only be interpretted by one who already knows OLE DB.Anyone out there know of a good book forDB programmingbeginers???I have a good understanding of MFC, COM, ActiveX, etc... Ijust need something to get going on creating custom OLE DB Providers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential tool for delivering data to applications on Win32
This book follows the form that has been used for a number of SDK and specification publications lately (such as for ODBC 3.0, OLE DB 1.1, and the Jet Database engine). The first 254 pages provides the model anddescriptive information. The rest is the OLE DB Reference. The book ismore ungainly to handle than the earlier OLE DB 1.1 Programmer's Referenceand SDK (which was only 700pp, including 165pp of description).

TheCD-ROM has quite a bit of material and for me is the most valuable part ofthe combination, even though much of it is available separately throughMicrosoft Web sites and other product CD-ROMS.The README.TXT providesthis information:

"The Microsoft Data Access Components CD containsthe 2.0 release of the Microsoft Data Access Components (ADO, OLE DB andODBC) so you can begin developing solutions today. In addition to thetechnology contained on this CD, white papers and other documentation isincluded to help you get started."

There are 41.5 MB of materialon the CD-ROM.

A 5.33MB directory in Help-file Format includes anon-line version of the specifications and documentation for the SDK.TheHTML HELP Format requires that you have IE 4.0x or that you install theHelp viewer that will operate with the Microsoft *.chm help-file format. You can access the documentation on the CD-ROM or copy it to your ownsystem for usage.Documentation covers several OLE DB 2.0 providers and atoolkit for rolling your own simple providers. There is alsodocumentation for OLE DB Test Tools and Samples.Since the complete OLE DB2.0 specification is included here in a searchable, HTML-formattedcross-linked form as a hyperdocument, this is a valuable substitute for thebook and appears well-integrated with the SDK and supplementaldocumentation.

The promised supplemental information and white papersinclude a conformance testing suite and guidelines for achieving adesirable level of conformance. ... Read more

Book Description
Learning an object oriented programming language like Visual Basic can be a challenging and often frustrating task. Many Visual Basic books are intimidating for the beginning programmer because they are mostly theory, making the material difficult to apply. Visual Basic 2005 by Practice cuts through the jargon and provides a better understanding of the language by teaching concepts through step-by-step, clear, and concise examples. These examples provide an easy-to-follow and simple approach to learning the concepts and tools involved with Visual Basic 2005, including the new language features and controls needed to complete beginning and intermediate projects. The examples cover a vast array of language features, including flow charts, radio buttons, detailed message boxes, loading images dynamically, calculations, constants, variables, image lists, creating sub procedures, printing, adding forms to a project, data grids, and string functions. The book also covers important topics such as interactive programming, database features, debugging, and Web controls. The source code for all the examples in the book is provided on the companion CD-ROM, which allows you to see the programs in action and examine their features. The book is written for entry- and intermediate-level Visual basic programmers as well as those experienced with other programming languages, such as those experienced with other programming languages, such as C++, Java and BASIC, and the .NET Framework - Visual Basic's development environment - is explained to the degree needed to learn programming. The user-friendly style, sequence of topical coverage, ample examples, and simple approach of this book make it a must-have for any beginning programmer eager to learn Visual Basic 2005. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If You Like Hands-On Learning, This Book is for You
I'm in a class that uses this book as the text. I am very impressed with the step-by-step instruction. The text doesn't assume anything and yet, it doesn't insult my intelligence.

Very well-written, easy to follow, and confidence inspiring.

Well done, Mr. Mostafavi!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Book on Programming re .NET
This is an introductory book on programming in Visual Basic 2005. However it does presume that you have programmed before on some kind of system. It doesn't matter which language, but the basic concept of writing commands, logic, and so on should be familiar to the reader. To be sure, he does give a bit of instruction into basic programming principles, but it is pretty basic.

Next he goes into a description of Visual Studio which is used to program in several Microsoft languages. Then on to writing programs. He leads you through the writing of a pretty basic program. While basic in nature this program covers a lot of the principles of programming. By the end of the chapter, you've put a small window on your screen.

Throughout the book he uses a series of extentions to the little program, and by the end of the book you should have a pretty good understanding of the language. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Loaded with programming techniques
This book is a great guide for advancing your Access programming skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the advanced user
This book is for the advanced user wanting to built a special application. Everything you need to program your application is in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great additional resource
It has been a great additional resource.I wouldn't say it is a complete desktop reference, but definitely helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought
The book was not exactly what I thought it was going to be.It seemed to really not cover forms in very much detail.Other areas such as ADO topics were covered more indepth than I would expect. This is a very techincal book and I don't think it would be very useful for people looking to learn access development.Overall an OK book but not one of the best that I have read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tool for the mind
I work for an energy management company and I find Access has robust data management capabilities that can be put to fruition without having to necessarily rely on outside people. In spite of its purported weakness on the web-solutions side, Access still is the only application that encompasses both desktop and server environments. Obviously, to take advantage of that, you need to be conversant with how Access ticks so if you want a book that will show you how to do all kinds of acrobatics with recordsets, this is the one for you!
Even better if you couple it with Programming Microsoft Office Access 2000 by the same author because they're not a rehash of each other and the latter covers the basics, such as designing tables, a bit more. The author's style is concise and to the point which allows him to span the whole gamut of what Access has to offer to the programmer. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I still refer to the previous edition
I bought the Access 2000 version of this book in 2001.It was very helpful in getting started with Access programming.Don't take the fast timetable too seriously.I found it covered well how to get started on each subject, after which the net was a good reference source.I still refer to it, and copied some useful code, eg for selecting files.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Crash" on page 10
After downloading the CheckWriter DB from Wiley's companion site for the book Access 2003 Programming Weekend Crash Course, I try and try but it will not run; it cannot find the linked files; and the "tools" for reference and linking are greyed out. So we "Crash" on page 10. How can the author claim he is teaching us Professional Techniques when his program will not run out of the box?

4-0 out of 5 stars Take your time; as much as you need
The authors set themselves an ambitious remit. Can they actually teach you Access in 15 hours? They motivate this with a scenario of a weekend in which you have to learn, starting on Friday night, and going to Sunday afternoon. The time is divided into 6 parts, one on Friday, 3 on Saturday, 2 on Sunday. Each part has several sessions (=lessons) of half an hour each. A novel approach, at least to me. Somewhat of a role-playing setup.

Each session goes over some straightforward coding. There is a back and forth between the widget forms, which often show tabular data, and the procedures that make these forms, or analyse input from them.

The pace is rather hurried. And you don't really get into the SQL itself. But, by and large, you may be able to get a basic operational familiarity with Access if you stay the course. The problem is that some lessons may well take more than half an hour. If you find yourself doing this, don't worry. You're not a retard! Just take as much time as you need to understand the material. I think the authors are overly optimistic about the alloted time for some sessions. Yes, you can force yourself to commit only 30 minutes to each. But at what cost in comprehension? More to the point, you presumably want to build on what you learn here. A shaky foundation may not help. So take your time.

The book could be improved if the authors dispense with the artifice of the 15 hours total. Cute gimmick. But it wears thin, and can actually interfere with the book's efficacy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Had everything I needed to get going, even the obscure stuff.

Only thing missing was an explanation of what Access does with it's version of Stored procedures, but then again, Microsoft isn't sure on that one itself, so that's no surprise.

Great book, I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars DAO and ADO
Love this book. This is the only book I know that does not abandon DAO.I like DAO.All other post Access 97 book abandons DAO.

It is well written and have used many of this examples for my job.I even like it better than the Getz books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific ADVANCED book
This book is not for the faint of heart in Access 2000 coding but it is invaluable to the advanced programmer.I refer to this book almost daily in developing our in-house applications. The real strength of this book is in developing code that is more portable or reusable.I have gone from writing sloppy code that is application (or even form) specific to writing completly reusable (and of course fully documented) code.Excellent reference for the power VBA programmer!

5-0 out of 5 stars IF YOU ARE A ACCESS DEVELOPER - DON'T MISS THIS BOOK!
I BOUGHT NOT LESS THAN 15 MS ACCESS BOOKS WHILE LEARNING ACCESS. I FOUND THIS ONE MOST HELPFUL. I HAVE LEARNED MANY THINGS FROM THIS VALUABLE BOOK: CLASS MODULES, CUSTOM COLLECTIONS, CUSTOM PROPERTIES & METHODS, APICALLS ETC ETC... THE AUTHOR HAD PROVIDED MANY USEFUL CODES. I REALLY LIKEHIS BOOKMARK TRACKER.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Mr. Barker
