5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book is awesome. It gets right to the point. Preston is incredible. He actually taught some of our acid-base lectures during renal, and they were some of the best lectures we have had.I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars a simple "open mind" book
enjoingyour reading
a practical and easy tounderstand little book which give you the key to approachfirst, and most important, a lot of trueclinical problem and second, more heavy textbook abt the issues treated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Lifesaver in Fluid & Electrolytes Ocean!
I purchased this book with some doubt, because you see a very high variability in these series. Now, i am very happy. Every medical student and resident gets frustrated with fliuid and electrolytes. Reading textbooks makes it worse. I have seen a lot of attendings and Nephrologists (!!) who are scared of this subject. This book can help you tremendously. It is written in a very simple language and gives you the proper approach to fluid and electrolyte problems. It is full of practical examples that you will see every day and shows you how to solve them. After reading this book, you will be confident enough to deal with electrolytes. Instead of replacing electrolytes blindly with K-Dur and Neutra-Phos and .... and not knowing what to do with Hyponatremia, you will have a nice framework in your brain to deal with them. And the best part: It is a small book. Don't hesitate to get it. You won't regret.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good but not good enough!
This book does only provide some miner basic understanding of Na, K, and acid base pathophysiology and replacement. Other e-lytes such as magnesium, calcium, phosphor and especially the interaction of those is completely missing. The acid base part is ok for getting a basic understanding of whats going on.
Overall I would say that there much better options to spend your money on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practically Life savor for both you and patient
I hardly anytime would give "5" stars to any products, but this just blew my doubts and misunderstanding out to pieces. I don't want to sound too explicit, but actually it's better than sex when you understand something and everything come to senses.

I mean you out there tell me what other book can teach you so perfectly acid base balances, mixed disorder and anion gap acidosis? No other. Considering even residents who work in US don't know how to calculate electrolyte, this is a topic regarded lightly by students. But I don't think so. By giving wrong fluid to critical patient, is not a good story to tell. It's so critical we have to know it. And first time I felt this material to be easy.

One day I was so frustrated on some acid base question of mixed acid base disorder, and was frantically searching in google, yahoo, msn , or anything I can put my hands on to enlighten concept as how to calculate electrolytes but without avail. So frustrated I even couldn't sleep that night. I tried to forget but soon it came to my mind boggling unsolved calculation. Then I was sparkled to my mind that I bought this book long time ago and it might explain to me something better. Sooner opening the page than I was gobbling all I could gorge the materials. That night, after I've done doing all the problems in that little book, I said to myself, Oh boy, this is actually better than sex!

the beauty of this book is way the explanation is so step wise and gives you a smooth comprehension followed by problems which makes you sure that you get it.

I mean I looked everwhere..... Even the Harrison didn't have the slightest notion of practical calculation to what it appears complex electrolyte acid base balance, but this little book made it so simple that finally made me think to sue Harrison(well just joking..)

First time I bought this book, I didn't take it seriously and put it in back corner of bookshelves, but I was so glad I bought it. I'm telling ya, this is the only book can save your exam and your patient as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate book to understand Acid-Base disorders. A must!
I have just finished reading this book. I am a second-year resident in pediatrics. This book is just * excellent *, it covers the topic effectively, it is well organized, easyto read, and it follows a logic and a thought. IIt comes with bunch of exercises to apply each unit content, and also different extra chapters for curious readers. I can't wait until read it again to consolidate this integrative knowledge. Dr. Abelow, great job!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most read classic for acid base disorder
This is an amazing book.I wish I had it when I was a medical student and in my resident years.I am now studying for my board exam. for intensive care and I am absolutely loving it!This is a great book because;
1. It is written in plain English. The author has made a very difficult but important subject very, very understandable.Everything is very well presented and all the important terms, units and formulas are well explained in a non-intimidating manner. It is pleasurable to go through each page and make studying such a painless experience.
2. It is very logical and intuitive. Each concept is very well handled and explained before the reader is allowed to proceed to the next. This is so vital as our knowledge in acid base disturbance is built upon good conceptual understanding of the basic physiology.
3. You feel like talking to a great teacher, who is patient, understanding and guiding you through every step of the way.The author seems to know exactly where you might be having trouble with the grasping of the concept and he knowns exactly where he needs to elaborate in more details. This guy knows what he is talking about and he is a masterful teacher.

Overall, an extremely well written book on a very difficult topic. Essentail reading for medical students, residents and specialist of all areas of medicine, as acid base disturbance is one of the most important foundation of good patient management.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I have read numerous other books on acid base and electrolyte disorders, but this book helped to clarify many questions I have had about interpreting ABGs, and electrolyte abnormalities. This book should be required reading for all medical students and residents!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For All Levels
I am currently studying medicine and got this book to help get a handle on the renal system and acid-base topics.I found it easy to understand, with good detail and lots of extra information. The case studies are a great way to illustrate the different conditions.I would definitely recommend it if you are keen to get a handle on (or master) acid-base and electrolyte physiology and disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction
An impressively lucid and detailed account of renal physiology, with a close focus on the clinical causes and implications. It is intensely practical, with up to date references (at time of publication) and sifting exerecises at the end of each chapter.

It is precisely what far too many 'nephrologists' have all but forgotten in their obsession with immunology, studying the aetiology of injury is all well, but without a text like this it's difficult to appreciate the intricacy, beauty and sheer majesty of renal physiology. Can you tell the difference between tubulo-glomerular feedback and glomerulotubular balance? - shame on the 'forensic pathologists' who can't! This book will provide rapid relief.

5-0 out of 5 stars BURTON ROSE AGAIN IS EXCELLENT
FOR RESIDENT AND FELLOWS AS STAFF TOO, THE FIFTH EDITION OF BURTON ROSE IS EXCELLENT, COVERING BASIC CONCEPTS AS WELL AS ALL THE RECENT RESEARCH MEDICAL NEWS IN FHE FIELDOF FLUID AND ACID BASE PHYSIOLOGY.IT SHOULD BE RECOMENDED FOR PRIVATE AND PUBLIC MEDICAL LIBRARY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding text, but consider "The essentials" for a lighter read
No doubt, this is a terrific textbook and is a great resource for Nephrology fellows, ICU fellows and general physiologists. However, for the med student or housestaff who would like to digest the basics of renal electrolyte handling and acid-base homeostasis, I'd like to recommend "Renal Pathophysiology the Essentials" by B.D. Rose and H.G. Rennke (ISBN: 0683073540). It is from 1994 and may lack some of the molecular details, but is an even more "readable" text.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best in its field
I found this book to be very useful in understanding the subject of acid base and electrolyte disorders. I recommend it for all physicians especially those working in emergency room, intensive and cardiac care units. In fact it is very helpful for all doctors working in the different clinical fields. It is simple and easily digested. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
The general aim of this handbook is to present a practical approach to the analysis of acid-base problems in the clinical setting with the goal of enabling the clinician to create an acid-base differential diagnosis. The content of the handbook was developed from courses given to medical students, residents, and renal fellows at UCLA. The handbook begins with a review of the concepts required to generate an acid-base differential diagnosis. In the initial chapter, the modified Henderson equation is emphasized. This equation will help the clinician acquire an intuitive understanding of the physiologic interrelationships underlying the pathogenesis of acid-base disorders. The initial chapter also discusses each of the four cardinal acid-base disorders in depth. The goal of this chapter is to introduce the clinician to the essential concepts, which are required to understand acid-base problems. The focus of subsequent chapters is on the approach to interpreting simple and mixed acid-base disorders. Each case is analyzed thoroughly followed by a series of teaching points. Initially, simple acid-base diagnoses are discussed in detail. Mixed acid-base disorders are then thoroughly analyzed. A series of short cases is then presented to help consolidate the concepts learned in the previous chapters. In the final chapter, the interested reader will confront many of the complexities and limitations of current acid-base diagnosis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best text on integrative physiology out there
This is probably one of the best textbooks on integrative physiology involving electrolytes on the market.Dr. Halperin is a phenomenal instructor and his prose makes learning interactive and interesting.Electrolytes are key to clinical medicine and surprisingly not very well understood by the medical masses. This textbook is full of examples, questions, and pearls.

The abundance of questions with thorough explanations is the strength of this book.An understanding of electolytes including urine electrolytes will be gained from the study of this text.

The target audience is really the physician with an already good grounding in acid-base disorders. It will allow one to build on past knowledge and to solidy any foundation that has already been established.I am really and truly impressed with this book and I refer to it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guideline to clinical acid-base physiology
Using patient-based problem solving, this text makes even the most difficult points of acid-base physiology clear. The writing style is breezy and entertaining and the layout allows you to pop in and out ofvarious sections without the need to start from scratch.I have used thetext for teaching medical students, residents and physician assistants. There is something in here for everyone. The authors' philosophy isobviously that acid-base problems are giant jig-saw puzzles and that youmight as well have fun while working them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for the price
I purchased this book having already read most of it. That being said, I knew what the book was like. It is very informative in an easy-to-understand way. The pictures help illustrate the points and add some humor to an otherwise boring (for me ) topic. My only complaint is that some mistake was made during the printing and/or editorial process. There were typo's and font problems throughout Chapters 10 and 11. Example: pg 284 at the bottom.Other than that, a good purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
Very well written book. I recommend this book to everyone interested in understanding the basic concepts of fluid homeostasis, electrolytes, and acid-base matters. A lot of images, large font - so don't be scared by the many pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fluid, Electrolyte and Acid-Base Companion
This is an excellent resource for those having difficulty mastering Acid-Base, Fluid and Electrolyte Disorders. This is the most comprehensive, and easy to understand book on this subject matter. Ideal not only for medical students, but for residents as well.
Recommend 2nd Edition, to include Divalent Cations; Ca, Mg, and P. Try to tackle Bartter's, Gitelman's a little more. May also touch on Liddle's Syndrome.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fluid, Electrolyte and Acid-Base Companion
This book copies the enormously popular style of Dubin's EKG book by placing a large picture at the top of every page and then some text and fill-in sentences (as a review) below it. I like this style and find that I can read and absorb much more information from it. Buy and master this book as a first year student taking renal physiology, as a second year student learning about electrolyte and acid base disorders, or as a house officer dealing with patients on every service in the hospital.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last ! Electrolytes and acid-base made easy ! ! !
This book has finally settled all my doubts concerning the fluid balance, electrolyte disorders and acid base equilibrium. The book explains a complicated and commonly misunderstood subject of the medical field in a simple cohesive manner, going from the most basic-college stuff and leading you through the clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment. Each page contains a title, a picture, a small simple paragraph and 2-4 questions at the end to make sure the reader is following along. It's a great book which I strongly recommend for third - four year medical students, as well as interns or first year residents who do not understand quit well this subject, and wish to settle this once and for all. ... Book Description

A practical diet plan for restoring the acid-alkaline balance your body needs to experience optimum health

Explains how acidification of the body contributes to disorders such as chronic fatigue syndrome, eczema, and ulcers

Categorizes food according to its acidifying or alkalizing effect on the body, rather than by chemical composition

Contains food tables to help readers design the best diet for their health needs

To enjoy optimum health, our body needs balanced quantities of alkaline substances and acids. An imbalance can result in health problems ranging from minor skin irritations, chronic fatigue, back pain, and depression to arthritis, ulcers, and osteoporosis.

Most people consume an abundance of highly processed foods that acidify the body and, as a result, are afflicted with many of these ailments. Naturopath and detoxification expert Christopher Vasey shows how a simple change in diet to restore your acid-alkaline balance can result in a vast improvement in health.

Vasey provides easy test methods to determine your acid levels, how to interpret these test results, and ways to establish a proper diet to maximize your health. Rather than organizing alkaline and acid foods on the basis of their chemical composition, Vasey categorizes foods based on their actual alkalizing or acidifying effect on the body so that you can design a diet best suited for your particular health needs. He goes further to explain how some foods, such as fruits, can have either an alkalizing or an acidifying effect, depending on who eats them, and how to use alkaline supplements to support your dietary needs.

4-0 out of 5 stars after 3 months on diet
I've now been following this diet for three months. I would first like to say that at the beginning of this diet I had head to toe eczema for the first time. Also at least 50% of the symptoms listed applied to me. A pH test confirmed that my body was much to acidic. After 3 months of following this diet my eczema is almost complete'ly gone. Only left on my hands a little. Also I,ve had back pain since I was a teanager and now have no pain. More than half the symptoms I was experiencing are gone. I do see a naturopath and he agrees this diet is a good choice and will benefit me in the long run. You do need to keep in mind that the book was written in 1999 and do a little of your own research. Like finding other supplements because his are not available. And Dr Vassey says that when he wrote the book there was'nt much research done on whether food is alkaline or acidic after entering the body. That information is now available. And so you need to follow an updated list. Genuine health has a good list on their web site. Dr Vassey talks about exercise and some other things to help rid the body of toxins and acids through the skin. Which is a good idea except when you have eczema. This is not mentioned but my naturopath told me this and I read that when doing research. All in all the information in this book has proven to be very valuable to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Acid-Alkaline Diet
Fabulous book. A lot of info that I really needed. It seems to be helping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healed!
After many years of struggling with several illnesses and not finding help at the doctors office, I became desperate for an answer. Turning to God for help, I beleive He led me to this book. After reading it, and implimenting what he teaches, I saw a remarkable difference within 3 weeks, my illneses started to go away, one by one.
Today, I am alot better, and full of energy. However, I notice if I go back to the way I used ot eat, I feel bad again. I think what he says makes sense, and most of Americans really eat too much proccesed foods. Now I cook more and look at my body as a gift from God, one I will only have once, and I better take the best care of it possible.
It is all about balance, eating the right ratio of alkaline to acidic foods. All foods are good, but only in the right balance. He doesnt push any diet, which I like. He simply teaches, and lets us come up with whatever works for us. Alot is by trial and error. He gives the info, and we must do the work. I thank God for this book.
You wont find all your answers in this book, if you want recipes, look elsewhere. But with the suggestions he gives for what to eat, I came up with my own recipes, it is not that hard.
The supplements he suggests were hard to find, but I did find one eventually, and it was helpful. Being from Europe myself, his food suggestions remind me of how we used to eat in France, lots of greens, every day.
Easy read, great book!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Controversy Continues
So far I've read four different books on this subject, including this one, and EVERY ONE states different things about what is acidic and what is alkaline. They also don't explain why, according to their diet, half the American population should be dead. Period. I don't care how much mineral reserve you have, or how adaptable the human body is, nobody should be able to survive smoking, drinking little or no water, drinking coffee and soda, and eating no fruits or vegetables. And yet, half the people I know fall into that category and aren't dead.

So, while I am giving this book a decent rating for recommending eating more fruits and vegetables, and cutting down on some other foods (meats), and that seems to be a healthy way to eat across the board, it doesn't adequately explain itself, so I'm rating it lower.

Book Description
This book will give students a thorough grounding in pH and associated equilibria, material absolutely fundamental to the understanding of many aspects of chemistry. It is, in addition, a fresh and modern approach to a topic all too often taught in an out-moded way. This book uses new theoretical developments which have led to more generalized approaches to equilibrium problems; these approaches are often simpler than the approximations which they replace. Acid-base problems are readily addressed in terms of the proton condition, a convenient amalgam of the mass and charge constraints of the chemical system considered. The graphical approach of Bjerrum, Hagg, and Sillen is used to illustrate the orders of magnitude of the concentrations of the various species involved in chemical equilibria. Based on these concentrations, the proton condition can usually be simplified, often leading directly to the value of the pH. In the description of acid-base titrations a general master equation is developed. It provides a continuous and complete description of the entire titration curve, which can then be used for computer-based comparison with experimental data. Graphical estimates of the steepness of titration curves are also developed, from which the practicality of a given titration can be anticipated. Activity effects are described in detail, including their effect on titration curves. The discussion emphasizes the distinction between equilibrium constants and electrometric pH measurements, which are subject to activity corrections, and balance equations and spectroscopic pH measurements, which are not. Finally, an entire chapter is devoted to what the pH meter measures, and to the experimental and theoretical uncertainties involved. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A New Approach to Solution Equilibria
Teaching solution equilibria has always been a difficult task for college professors. Professor de Levie has shown how this subject can be made more palatable for students. This is most clearly demonstrated in his discussion of acid-base titrations. By using spead-sheet techniques and treating pH as an independent rather than dependent variable, titration curves are easily generated without making approximations. de Levie's approach is unique. The popular textbooks dealing with this subject still involve the "old fashioned" approach, which is a pedagogical nightmare. This book is a MUST for all those who teach solution equilibria at the freshman and sophmore levels in colleges and universities. I doubt that it would be a suitable textbook for the students in these courses because of the detail involved. However, the book is highly recommended for courses dealing with solution equilibria at the upper division level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost finished...
This is a really good book. It teachs how to solve simple acid-base calculations from a crude sketch in the sand, to more advanced cases were you need iterative methods. It's actually more practical and directed against finding the CHEMICAL information than all simpler books I have encountered. It's not an introduction booklet in chemistry; it's more for the somewhat more advanced but still practical uses.
But it's marred with the lack of a really thorough proofreading. If you study the text hard because you need to understand the techniques thoroughly, you will discover what must be "typing errors". And there are diagrams that show one to three curves less than what is descriebed in the text. And none of these curves are numbered, so you can't be sure which curves are overlapped with supporting lines. - This makes the book unnecessary labourous to read.
If these errors are removed in a second edition, the book will deserve 5 stars.
In a book of this type it would also do with a handful of excersises at the end of each chapter, with answers at the end of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
It is a very good book, spetially for basic analytical chemistry. It is difficult to find a book where the student can find a lot of examples very well considered. The acid base equibrium is the basis for understandingionic equilibrium and sometimes you lose inside the mathematical aspectsbut forgetting the chemical aspects. I recommend this book, not only forstudents but also for profesors in the subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hearty Endorsement from Educator
Dr. Kain's science books provide marvelous supplemental activities for children to experience the excitement of science. The activities are great for kids with learning handicaps and offer them the opportunity to enjoyand learn outside of a more rigid curriculum.Children are introduced tothe concept of the scientific method in a fun and hands-on fashion. Teachers are given ideas for extending the activities into other academicdisciplines. And finally there is a wealth of additional resourcesavailable in the back of the teacher's manual for those who wish to expandupon the concepts introduced in the books.

I heartily endorse the use ofthese books by educators of children in grades K through 5.

My 4-year-old daughter loves this book. She had me read it over-and-over again. Then we started mixing some stuff together. She may not understand everything but it sure has been fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's like going to the dentist!
Reading the Science Spiders books is like going to the dentist. So why did I rate the books so highly?I have a very good dentist. He's friendly, interesting, and before we're finished with the small talk, he'sfinished with the injection. The worst part of going to the dentist is overbefore I know it's happening. The Science Spider books are simple, playful stories about a patient, scientifically inclined mom and her youngchildren. The readers don't realize they're learning science until after ithappens. My jaw gets numb just thinking about it.There's no math, butreaders of all ages become familiar with chemical reactions, color theory, acids, bases, forces, energy, molecules, scientific method, air pressure, and center of gravity. The lucky children who are introduced to scienceby the Science Spiders will have a positive feeling for the subject thatcan only help them in future studies.Dr. Kain has a Ph.D in materialsscience and engineering. She barely conceals her identity in the books as"Mom." Mom is an excellent role model for all children, butespecially girls. She and her kitchen experiments prove that science isvery much woman's work. And apparently, so is dentistry.
