Extractions: NATIONAL LEAGUE 1 Why the American League won: A combination of great pitching and the long ball helped lead the A.L. to its fifth consecutive All-Star victory and 11th in 14 games. Three of the A.L.s four runs came on solo homers by Cal Ripken Jr., Derek Jeter and Magglio Ordonez, who was the only player for either team to have two hits. Meanwhile, A.L. pitchers held N.L. batters to just three hits. Why the National League lost: While their pitchers prevented A.L. hitters from putting together a big inning, three of the eight hits they allowed were homers. And the N.L.s own offense was anemic. The senior circuit had only three hits-two singles and a double-and didnt have a runner reach base until Luis Gonzalez led off the fourth inning with a single. The 3-4-5 spots in the N.L. lineup went a combined 0-for-12. Turning Points The A.L. got on the scoreboard in the third inning when Ripken, playing in his 18th and final All-Star Game, hit a solo homer to left field on the first pitch he saw from Chan Ho Park to give the A.L. a lead it would never surrender. Ripken received a thunderous standing ovation from the crowd at Seattles Safeco Field and eventually was named All-Star Game MVP.

How on Earth could you forget the mob-tainted 1919 White Sox? All of the incidents of cheating you mentioned were by individual players with one exception. However, all of the acts of cheating you mentioned are or were widely practiced (or so some of the athletes claimed) by others; they just happened to get caught. What you failed to mention is the most damaging of all cheating incidents. Of all the incidents of cheating in baseball, the most infamous, far-reaching and hurtful to the sport was the 1919 Black Sox World Series scandal. How did you forget about that? Cheating on a scale that makes all the petty incidents you mention sound pathetic. Corked bats hey, the batter still has to make contact. Loaded balls the pitcher still has to get the ball in the strike zone or get the batter to swing. There is a certain amount of skill involved in all those cheating practices.

After a one-year stint with the Negro Leagues' Indianapolis Clowns, Aaron will make his major league debut with the Milwaukee Braves on his way to a record 755 home runs... On February 5, 1919, National League chief John Heydler dismisses charges against Cincinnati Reds star Hal Chase, who had been accused of throwing games and betting against his own team. The charges had been brought forth by Reds manager Christy Mathewson and owner Garry Herrmann. Heydler rules that Chase's poor play was attributable to "carelessness," and not to gambling. The Reds will soon trade Chase to the New York Giants...On February 5, 1903, the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox announce they will play a series of 15 pre-season games against each other. On February 5, 1983, the Toronto Blue Jays acquire minor league first baseman Cecil Fielder from the Kansas City Royals for journeyman outfielder Leon Roberts. Although the Blue Jays won't see the benefits, Fielder will become one of the American League's top power hitters after a stint in the Japanese League. Fielder will lead the AL in home runs in 1990 and 1991 with the Detroit Tigers... On February 5, 1942, the Boston Braves make one of their best trades ever, acquiring outfielder Tommy Holmes from the New York Yankees for Buddy Hassett and Gene Moore. Holmes will compile a batting average of over .300 with the Braves and will win the MVP in 1948... On February 5, 1921, the New York Yankees purchase 10 acres of land in the Bronx. The Yankees will use the land as the site for their new park, which will be called Yankee Stadium.

Playing mostly as a second baseman, Schoendienst will bat .289 during a 19-year career with the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants and Milwaukee Braves. Schoendienst will win election to the Hall of Fame in 1989... On February 2, 1930, the New York Yankees waive shortstop Leo Durocher, who batted only .246 in 1929. On February 2, 1976, the Veterans Committee selects players Roger Connor and Fred Lindstrom and umpire Cal Hubbard as the newest class of Hall of Famers. Extractions: E xactly when baseball arrived in Japan isn't clear. Horace Wilson, a professor in Tokyo, is credited with introducing the American game to his students during the Meiji Era (1867-1912). This was the beginning of the assimilation of the Western game which the Japanese named Yakkyu, meaning "field ball." Since then, the game has developed into a popular pastime for the Japanese. During the Meiji restoration, as the Japanese began a process of modernization, they adopted many Western ideas. Western sports started to be introduced at this time, particularly baseball. According to Robert Whiting, the Japanese found the one-on-one battle between pitcher and batter similar in psychology to their native sumo and martial arts. It involved split second timing and a special harmony of mental and physical strength (p.6). Because of this, the Ministry of Education believed it was good for the national character and encouraged its growth. By the early twentieth century, the game flourished in schools and colleges. According to Microsoft's Complete Baseball (MCB) , Scholastic baseball hadand still hasthe same grip on Japanese fans that college football bowl games or the March Madness basketball tournament has on fans in the U.S..
