Editorial Review

Book Description
This is the second edition of Marvin N. Tolman’s bestselling book Hands-On Earth Science Activities for Grades K-6. Like all the books in The Science Problem-Solving Curriculum Library series, this revised edition offers compelling activities that help teach students thinking and reasoning skills along with basic science concepts and facts. The book’s activities follow the discovery/inquiry approach and encourage students to analyze, synthesize, and infer based on their own hands-on experiences. This new edition includes an expanded Teacher Information section, inquiry-based models, and complex cooperative learning projects using materials found around the home. Many of the activities easily become great science fair ideas as well as activities that correlate with the national standards.

Designed to be user friendly, the book includes easy-to-use, hands on activities and is organized into eight sections:

Air

Water

Weather

The Earth

Ecology

Above the Earth

Beyond the Earth

Current Electricity

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Informative
I purchased all three of the science activity books to help fill in a homeschool science program. I think I could probably use these books alone as a science program. These are great experiments with enough background for the non-science person to teach from. They use largely materials that you have lying around the house, and when they ask for something less available, there is often another experiment with more common items that teaches the same concept. Very adaptable to the multi-age classroom that most homeschoolers have. It's very easy to make the lessons harder for older students while not "losing" the Kindergarteners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Elementary Use
I bought this book for use in my sixth grade classroom, it is a little to basic for my students but there are a few good demonstration and activity ideas.I bought the book looking for a large number of activities, and I found that this book has a little too much explanatory information on some subjects (1 activity every 2-3 pages in the book).I just wanted activities, not another textbook! I can see that for a self contained elementary classroom it would be a good resource and it should be marketed K-5.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK but where are the foldables
I had an earlier book that Dinah Zike had written about Earth Science ideas and foldables.I thought this would be the same.Since I allowed someone to borrow that book (and they never returned it), I am lost.

This book isn't anything like her other book. This is like the Janet Van Cleave books.Which is are OK, but I already have 1000s of activities.I needed the foldables to go with the activities I already have.

I was disappointed. But since it would cost almost half of the price of the book to return it....I just kept it and think it will be a good present for a brand new science teacher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I am so glad I bought this book. As a homeschool mom of three,I have spent a lot of money buying books and curriculums for science and this book just explained everything clearly. My son suddenly had this lightbulb go on when I was talking to him about the water cycle and suddenly seeing the examples of them everywhere. Where was this book 5years ago when I first started homeschooling?
Would have saved me some sleepless nights worrying about a science curriculum or how I was going to explain certain concepts to them without having to spend tons of money or paraphrasing everything.
The books has great scripting and leading questions to ask the children. Great visuals as well. I can't wait to get my hands on other books by her.

5-0 out of 5 stars science help for teachers, parents, and homeschoolers
Elaine Levenson has done a fabulous job of putting together a book of science teaching principles and ideas for people who work with children, ages 4-10.The book begins with three chapters that tell us how toencourage the inquisitive nature of young children and nurture theirscience skills, how to organize a science unit, and how to make thelanguage connection with science. These chapters are very clearly writtenin a pleasing format, so they are user-friendly even to the scientificallyilliterate (like me). The rest of the chapters cover topics such asweather, animals, seed-bearing plants, and ecology in a beautifullyorganized fashion. Each unit begins with a list of objectives and a goodbase of information on the topic for the adult. Then the activities andprocedures section begins, starting with the easiest and most concretelessons and progressing to more difficult ones. Thus, each unit is ideallysuited to families with siblings of all ages.At the end of each unit arelists of further rescources, grouped for children, adults and olderchildren, and literature connections for younger children. There are alsosuggestions for field trips and other community connections. One thing Ilike about this book and its companion volume, Teaching Children AboutPhysical Science, is that the graphics are pleasing and the text is easy tofollow. But also, the author has a sound appreciation for how children'scuriosity about the natural world around them easily creates opportunitiesfor making science moments happen. I highly recommend this book to allparents and teachers, but especially to homeschoolers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple science experiments for children
I just love this book.It is one I will be using often. If I had been taught this way in school I would have loved science. This book is filledwith simple, interesting science lessons and experiments.Divided intoeight subjects:models; the five senses; weather; volcanoes, rocks anderosion; animals and insects; seed bearing plants; and ecology.I highlyrecommend it.It has lessons anyone can do with objects around the houseand my kids love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy, inexpensive, and fun science for teachers and parents
Elaine Levenson has written two of the very best hands-on science books for teachers, parents, or homeschoolers. The experiments are easy to follow and don't require elaborate, expensive equipment or a Ph.D in rocketscience. I have used this book in my teaching, writing, and with my ownchildren. With this book, and its companion volume Teaching Children aboutPhysical Science, you'll have everything you need for great science. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Changed how I taught Science
This book is more than just a "hands-on" science book for teachers. It actually helps you adjust lessons you already teach so that students become inquiring, exploratory, and problem solvers.Students gainconfidence in their own ability to find solutions and approach problems.Iused this book in college, and now will purchase it again (because I thinkmy roommate grabbed mine) to help me plan out the upcoming school year. ...
