II. Guest: Chris McKenzie, Executive Director of the League of Kansas Municipalities Mr. McKenzie commented on the status of legislative action concerning Kansas cities and stated that the major pending issue was the transportation plan. The major difference between the House and the Senate on this issue is funding. Tax cuts, especially elimination of the motor vehicle tax, are unlikely because of the proposal to fund the transportation plan in part from the general fund. Over the next two weeks local efforts could be instrumental in advancing the plan through a series of six workshops planned to promote the plan across the state by Economic Lifelines. A final plan will likely utilize the significant increase in the highway fund, which was higher than estimated. Another option is to allocate more federal funds to state roads.

If someone would have told me a year ago that I would be standing before you today delivering the State of the City address, I would never have believed it. As many of you probably know, I was elected mayor last month by the City Council after Mayor Joan Bowman announced her resignation. I will finish her term, which ends in April, and then, because I am running unopposed in the April election, I will serve the next four years as your mayor. Joan worked tirelessly to make our community one of the finest in the area. Her incredible passion for Lenexa and our citizens was always at the very heart of everything she did. She always made time to listen to citizens' concerns and ideas, and she rarely missed an opportunity to visit with even the youngest Lenexa citizens, including our third graders during their visits to City Hall for "Learning About Lenexa."

None of the cities on the cards are state capitals, which provides an extra challenge for students. Copy the game cards on cardstock. You might want to decorate the back of the cards with a sticker such as a flag or another symbol. If possible, laminate the cards, then cut them out. Before students begin playing the game, use a map to review well-known cities in different states. See how many cities students can think of. Find each city on the map and point it out to students. Game Rules: Shuffle the cards and place them face down. Turn the first card up and show it or read it to students. If a student knows the state in which the city is found, he or she can raise his or her hand to answer the question.
