1-0 out of 5 stars Too easy, too many mistakes, too few practice problems
Too easy: the review is too sparse and too basic to be useful. The AP test will require a much more rigorous preparation than this guide can provide.

Too many mistakes: surprisingly, some of the answers provided to the review questions at the end of each chapter are clearly wrong (which is easily verifiable by a look back at the chapter). Examples: Chapter 3question 3 should be A. Chapter 5 free response question -- the answer is given as "B" -- is this a joke? Chapter 8 #3 should be D and #5 should be C. Chapter 10 #1 should be D. Chapter 11 #2 should be E. Maybe there are more, but these are the ones I have found so far.

Too few practice problems: There are only 5 multiple choice practice problems per chapter. Answers are given, though they are often wrong, and no explanations are provided (however, the practice test does have explanations). A free response question is often omitted (the author refers back to a problem given within the chapter itself). The questions are easier than the actual AP test, which is disappointing for a review book.

I would suggest going with the Princeton Review version, at least for this AP test.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and poorly thought out
I used both this book and the Priceton Review, and I have to say the Princeton Review one is much better.
The Barron's one appears to have lots of practice questions, but really, towards the middle of the book they leave out free-response questions. Instead, they tell you to solve the question that was provided in the middle of that chapter.
It was as if they wrote this on a deadline and rushed through the entire thing. The content seemed inadequate and explanations were poor. Their attempts to make funny remarks to appeal to the teenage audience were often inappropriate or left the reader confused.
Barron's is usually my first choice for AP prep, but the AP economics book is one exception.
However, you might want to buy this anyway since it comes with 2 practice tests that you could use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Practice tests are lacking
When compared to the Princtons review book, I found that the tests in the Barrons book were too easy. The rest of the book is well laid ou though and explanations are clear and concise.I took the micro and macro tests in may 06 and got 5s on both. But this was mostly because of the princeton book & going online to the ap website.

4-0 out of 5 stars paperback
wow another gripping economics textbook!!!!

I keep this one on my coffee table, displaying it proudly in my home.

the chapters dont match the ones in the case fair hardcover principles of economics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Principles Of Microeconomics
This book helps me alot in my jop and in my life.

4-0 out of 5 stars About the mathematics used in the book
Mathematics is used broadly in the book but limited to simple algebra, i.e., no calculus is used. So the level thus is appropriate for an introductory economics class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reading level of the book
The text is of medium reading level, although sometimes the extensive introduction to terms is unavoidable in introductory texts. That is to say, we can find pages with five or six terms crowded together, but that'swhat happens to almost every introductory textbook and generally expectedwhen you touch a new subject at the first time.

4-0 out of 5 stars General Orientation of the book
The general orientation of the book is theory with applications, and the authors seem to emphasize the real-world application a lot. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AP Economics teacher highly recommends
As an AP Economics teacher, I recommended 5 Steps to a 5 to my students this past year. The students gave it high marks for its thorough review of both micro and macro economics. The author provides strong pointers for each concept and plenty of practice questions. The students' results were outstanding: a 100 percent pass rate on micro and 98 percent on macro, with mostly 4s and 5s on the two exams. My students worked hard throughout the year, but this review guide helped a lot with test preparation. Having used the Princeton "Cracking the AP" book in previous years, I found 5 steps to a 5 to be thesuperior review book. ... Read more

Product Description
Macroecomics Textbook version. Softcover paperback version. 600 pages. Published by Worth Publishers. Authored by Paul Krugman and Robin Wells. College and University Textbook. Microeconomics is the study of the economic behavior of people as individuals and in organizations such as corporations. Macroeconomics is the study of economic behavior of human beings as nations and the economic interactions between nations. It involves aspects of the economy such as money, savings, growth, stocks and flows, inflation, unemployment, taxation, national budgets and so forth. The study does not prefer one type of government policy over another, but studies the tradeoffs of the effects of different economic choices. Those of us who prefer specific outcomes will prefer certain choices over others, but that is not a part of the broader topic. ... Read more

This text conveys the principles of macroeconomics in a superb conversational style that engages students in the material unlike any other text.By appealing to students' interests and language; using familiar stories, illustrations, and scenarios and a direct-to-student writing style; and a narrative built on questions, the distance is lessened between the student and the unfamiliar concepts of economics. The book also maintains a focus on presenting basic concepts in depth and developing economics analysis step-by-step, rather than covering hundreds of topics superficially. With this book, students are discouraged from simply memorizing facts, and are engaged in active learning. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Econ Profs, Start Here First
This is one of 2 books I kept from my four years in college. It is also the book that helped me choose Economics as one of my minors. It's that good.

Gottheil's models (actually, he really only uses one model--a fishery) are almost absurdly easy to follow.Along the way he takes concepts a student would find new and difficult, and makes them into concepts a student can follow, and in my case, enjoy.I whole heartedly reccomend this title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Principles of Microeconomics by Gottheil = SIMPLICITY
I have now had two course in economics - Principles of Micro. and Macro., both classes required the use of the priciples books by Fred Gottheil. My professor was a student of Mr. Gottheil and described his classes as clarifying. She said that he made economics easy to understand. This book by Gottheil, as his class, is also easy to comprehend. The topics are confusing to a newcomer of economics but the style and clarification used makes the principles quite simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand Economics??
You're absolutely correct!!I was a student of Prof. Gottheil the first year he released this book. The teachings of the book make Micro-Economics both easy to understand and enjoyable.I've recommended this book to both undergrads and MBA students alike, and have not received a single complaints (but have received much praise). ... Book Description
This is the first full-length survey of current work which examines the compatibility of microeconomics and macroeconomics. Its particular distinction is that it makes accessible, to non-specialists, those extensive modern refinements of general equilibrium theory which are linked to macroeconomics and monetary theory. Part I traces the development and interlocking nature of two scientific research prgrams, macroeconomics and neo-Walrasian analysis. The five chapters in this part examine general equilibrium theory, Keynes' contribution, the 'neoclassical synthesis', and the Clower-Leijonhufvud contributions to questions of systemic coordination. The four chapters of Part II place recent work on the micro-foundations of macroeconomics within a taxonomic scheme of Walrasian equilibrium, Walrasian disequilibrium, Edgeworthian equilibrium, and Edgeworthian disequilibrium. Part III, a single chapter, provides an overview of the subject and ventures some conclusions.Download Description

1-0 out of 5 stars For the4,827th time,Weintraub fails to integrate derivatives
Weintraub builds the foundation of this book on his chapter 3,which is titled "The 4,827th reexamination of Keynes's system".Unfortunately, for the 4,827th time,Weintraub demonstrates that economists are unable to integrate(take the antiderivative) Keynes's derivatives from pp.55-56,ft.2 and pp.282-286 of the General Theory in order to arrive at Keynes's original model .Any reader of this review, who has passed the first semester of college level calculus and analytic geometry, will discover that Keynes's basic model(the D-Z model of expected aggregate demand and supply) is that the expected aggregate supply functionZ=g(N)=P+wN ,where P equals expected profit,w is equal to a constant money wage and N equals aggregate employment. The expected aggregate demand function is equal to D=pO,where p is equal to an expected price and O=f(N)is real output. The actual aggregate demand function is Y=C+I,where C=a+bY(or C=bY)and b equals the marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods.Weintraub claims that Z=pq(pO),where q=f(N)is real output and that D=C+I(see Weintraub,pp.40-42).The"employment function"that Weintraub claims to derive on p.46 has absolutely nothing todo with the analysis presented by Keynes in chapter 20.Keynes worked with the real (expected) wage,( w/p).Weintraub's ordinate is incorrectly defined as the money wage,w.In Keynes's system, changes in the money wage cause shifts in the curves and not movement up and down a fixed"employment function"curve. Finally, Weintraub's claim that "The Z-D model was developed by S. Weintraub[1958]and extended by Davidson and Smolensky[1962]and Davidson[1972}",(Weintraub,p.47)makes no sense because anyone who can integrate the derivatives of chapter 20 ,or just follow Keynes's analysis, will see that the Z-D model is, contrary to E.Roy Weintraub, the intellectual creation and property of one John Maynard Keynes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keynes meets Walras
The concern of the book are the various approaches to unify macroeconomics and monetary theory with general equilibrium theory. The book consists of three parts. In the first part, the problems are outlined, the interpretations of Keynes and the standard Arrow-Debreu-McKenzie model are survied, together with early approaches to unify them. The second part takes a look at Walrasian approaches, where prices and markets are central, and Edgeworthian approaches, where direct exchanges are examined, to macroeconomic questions. Both are examined from a static equilibrium perspective and dynamic disequilibrium theory. The third part is dedicated to reflections.
The book is surveying the field, it is not a textbook. The discussion remains on an informal level, with little mathematics being used. The book should be readable to advanced undergraduates and more advanced readers. The only drawback is that the book is a little bit old. There is no discussion of OLG models, which became popular later. Since the topic of dynamics has been neglicted by GE theorists for quite some time, the book is still worth reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very didactic (undergraduate) introduction to microeconomics
I have the first edition (2001).

Despite the fact that I think some "axioms" of economics are based on muddy, suspect foundations, I gave 5 stars to this book because it is a FUNNY and very didactic introduction to microeconomics. So that, if you want to grasp the main principles of this area I think you will have an excelent "companion" in your hands. Most examples are very practical and cool.

Their macroeconomics book is also very didactic. I think it is a characteristic of the authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for review
In this study guide, Hall and Lieberman provide an excellent accompaniment to their brilliant text. All the exercises are very clear, as is the answer key, which gives one the opportunity to see where one went wrong in aparticular concept. The scope of the study guide is exactly the same asthat of the book. Basically, if you can do everything in the guide, youhave mastered their concepts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Economics Book
If you are looking for an economics book that isn't going to put you to sleep, this is the one.It is complete yet interesting to read.Yes, I said interesting in the same sentence as economics.Arnold uses many real life examples that the average student can relate to and keeps the math to a minimum (there is an appendix for this stuff).By far the best intro to econ books are by Arnold.

Book Description
This text conveys the principles of microeconomics in a superb conversational style that engages students in the material unlike any other text.By appealing to students' interests and language; using familiar stories, illustrations, and scenarios and a direct-to-student writing style; and a narrative built on questions, the distance is lessened between the student and the unfamiliar concepts of economics. The book also maintains a focus on presenting basic concepts in depth and developing economics analysis step-by-step, rather than covering hundreds of topics superficially. With this book, students are discouraged from simply memorizing facts, and are engaged in active learning. ...
