Book Description
A captivating collection of photographs of tribal leaders at a critical and poignant moment in Native American historyThese hauntingly beautiful Native American portraits reflect the tragic history of the Cheyenne, Sioux, Pawnee, Cherokee, and other tribes whose leaders traveled to Washington in the mid-nineteenth century to negotiate treaties with the U.S. government. As compelling as the famous photographs of Edward S. Curtis, these unique images provide a close-up, unromanticized record of Native American life at the beginning of the great westward expansion of U.S. territory. The photographs form the core not only of the Smithsonian's extensive collection of Native American photographs but of many collections in museums around the world.

Paula Fleming recounts the intriguing history of this collection, which was the Smithsonian's—and perhaps the country's—first photographic exhibit. A succinct biography of A. Zeno Shindler, the photographer, is followed by a thoughtful examination of the key events surrounding the Indian delegations in Washington. The 325 halftones are accompanied by the correct identifications of the images, providing for the first time a comprehensive picture of a poignant moment in history. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great introduction
if you have a little musical background, this book will get you going in the right direction with your native flute.when i first started playing my cedar flute, everything sounded off-key.after reading carlos nakai's introduction and learning to play his tunes from the scores in the book, i understood the intervals of the native flute and which notes sound good in what patterns.Soon i was able not only to play nakai's beautiful songs but also to improvise on my own.being able to read music is a big help but if you have that skill, this book will give you hours of fun and learning.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginning Players
For anyone interested in a generic understanding of the Native American FLute they may find it here. However for those who would like to learn to play and have no prior musical knowledge they will find it a discouraging study...difficult to understand without first mastering musical theory. The most valuable parts of "The Art of The Native American FLute" are the musical transcriptions of Carlos Nakai's songs written in flute tablature. They are though beneficial only for the advanced player that can read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Carlos Nakai flute book
I thought Native American flute music was from the heart, this book teaches writen music and memorizing notes. it was disapointing to me because thats not what i want to do. But for someone you does its a very good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for any Native Americn Flute enthusiast
"The Art of the Native American Flute" is both a comprehensive reference and a fun read.A reader with only passing familiarity with Native American flutes and music (read: has seen a photo or heard one played once) will easily be able to play the role of expert after reading this tome.

The book begins with information on the flute's historical and legendary origins. After this introduction, the reader is invited to look at a deconstructed flute and understand how all the parts fit together to form the whole. The authors discuss the flute's similarities and differences to such instruments as the pipe organ and the European recorder, and they also give a detailed analysis of how each flute's unique sound is produced.

The reader will go on to learn about care, cleaning and maintenance of the flute.Of course, the reader will also be shown how to properly play the flute (including topics such as altering tones and tablature-to-key relationships). After reading these sections, the reader can go on to practice any ofa number of included songs.

The book wraps up with extensive lists of bibliographies, discographies and references, and even an essay on the authenticity of both the style of music and the instrument itself.

This book is indispensable for anyone who has the desire to learn more about Native American flutes.Get the book, get a flute, and begin to enjoy unique beauty of this wondrous instrument.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Beginners or Advanced players
As a beginning NAF player, I found this book fascinating.I read it before I bought my first flute, and I found the information on various types of flutes, construction, care and history to be very helpful.

I've used this book as one of my main texts for teaching myself to play this wonderful instrument.I also found the presentation of the TAB system to be useful as I have branched out into writing music of my own. ... Read more

Book Description
Unlike most anthologies that present a single story from many writers, this volume offers an in-depth sampling of two or three stories by a select number of both famous and emergent Native women writers. Here you will find much-loved stories (many made easily accessible for the first time) and vibrant new stories by such well-known contemporary Native American writers as Paula Gunn Allen, Louise Erdrich, Joy Harjo, Linda Hogan, and Leslie Marmon Silko as well as the fresh voices of emergent writers such as Reid Gomez and Beth Piatote. Although diverse in style, language, and tone, all of these stories are reckonings with the brutal history of colonization and its ongoing consequences:they reveal Native epistemologies; testify to historic wrongs; and insist upon an accounting.A reckoning requires diving inward and resurfacing with new insights. These stories share an understanding of Native women's lives in their various modes of loss and struggle, resistance and acceptance, and rage and compassion, ultimately highlighting the individual and collective will to endure. These contemporary stories reflect cycles--mythic cycles, life cycles, cycles of resistance, and healing cycles--that insure Native survival. These are the stories told and retold by Native women who refuse to be silenced.Their collection celebrates survival and provides readers with an essential new resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse into what we lost when Native American culture was decimated. An absolutely gripping book.
I can't recommend this book highly enough.Aside from being full of speeches and insights that belong in the Classics section of any decent library, the strong and concise way in which these speakers convey the greatness of Native American thought and culture is unlike anything you will ever get from your favorite writer of history books, or contemporary decendant of these great people.

I will even go so far as to say that if you are moved by the great words of Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King Jr. it would be a horrible oversight not to have read this volume.

Additionally, the book includes several short bits of historical background which are remarkable in themselves.

Great words, great thought, unlike Western or Eastern thought or any philosophy you have ever read. You can only wish these cultures had survived the holocost that was inflicted on them better so that we could have benefited to a greater degree than was done by taking their gold, land, and lives.

Credit must be also given to the Dover Thrift Edition series for not only making well known classics affordable and accessible to the average reader, but publishing such books as this which are lesser known yet of great importance to the reading and thinking public.

BOTTOM LINE: Please read this book. It's that important.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear speeches, honest speeches
Great Speeches by Native Americans is the model of simplicity. Though edited by Bob Blaisdell, who presumably provides the single-paragraph introductions, the bulk of the book is simply the spoken words of Native Americans from the time of first contact in North America to the present day. Their messages speak for themselves.

A number of themes and characteristics run through these selections. One is their brevity. The speakers get to the point and make it clearly. Few inclusions run longer than five pages. There is also a level of genuine (and often sad) honesty. Many selections concern the loss of tribal lands and the American Indians' efforts to hold onto them or gain just compensation, if such a thing was possible at the time. The tone is often one of resignation, but also of appeal to the better nature of their listeners. It is not possible to say if these speeches were carefully selected for this editorial theme or not, but it appears that for several centuries the native peoples viewed, rightly or wrongly, the European and later American entry into the continent as something that words and argument and demonstrated moral behavior could combat. Even among the surrender speeches of various tribal chiefs we see the notion that no speaker could really understand what their people could have done differently to avoid such conflicts.

The style could almost be considered anti-oratorical, though the simple approach is here elevated to a style of its own. One should probably consider that many of these speeches are translated into English. Nonetheless, the organization of thought and prioritization of points shows a group of people, separated by years, language, and geography who retain a clear-headed means of addressing their listeners. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Native American Voices: A reader
This reader is a great resource for teachers at all levels. It proved to be a great help in my curriculum planning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for any reader looking for general overview
Native American Voices may be the only volume that emits from "Native Country" encompassing the western hemisphere. From the Inuit and Athapascan near the Polar Rim to the Mapuche and Tierra Del Fuego, thisvolume winnows articulation from a variety of common dialogues.Often weare presented with great philosophy; sometimes we are greeted withprophacy. But, always there is the warning that the lives of the NativePeople have been assaulted and drastically altered, and if we, the NativeNations, do not reverse ourselves and adhere to the wisdom and theknowledge of our forefathers, we may, along with "civilization,"perish.Perusing Native American Voices, we are presented with a scurry oftribal activity that cautions the Elders to guide the youth, and for theyouth to listen and to employ that wisdom with respectful enthusiasm.Fromthe British Domain down through California, piercing the Dakotas, enteringthe realm of the Iroquois Confederacy and southward, there is the cry ofpolitical injustice, and that taking the Tribal Laws of great NativeNations and using them for the benefit of the invading masses is not an actof righteousness. In Native Ameircan Voices we hear the weeping of womenand children and the clash of swords as the invading hordes rush to attacha people armed only with kindness.WE are witness to the attack. We arealso a spectator in the arena where native multitudes are marched in to bebaptized in the name of God. Moments later, the baptized are beheaded. Native American Voices is often a requirement in my classes. The studentswonder why there were never taught "this" in American and WorldHistory in high school. They, too, worry about the value of life in thefuture. But, thanks to the labors of special people likeLobo and Talbot, the Native People will not fade into the sunset. On page 477, Philip Deeresuccinctly states the determination of the Native Nations to continue,"We are a people that are made and placed here for a purpose.Throughmany struggles, through many years of struggle and sufferings we refuse todie."Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful art, fascinating text.
I don't know how sound any of it is academically, but this book is worth it just for the gorgeous art - both contemporary and older. I also found the essays really interesting. Unbiased? Probably not, but definitely perspectives worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fact is they lost
Enjoyed reading this book. It provides the reader with a basic history of the competition between the native population and the incoming europeans in which they lost. Nicely written. Nicely illustrated.

Does it change my view of things on this Matter?

No.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont waste your money...
This book has one over-riding theme repeated constantly: The White Man is always wrong and the Indian is and has always been an innocent victem. I won't list details, but the lack of objectivity and obvious implications to the promote the theme are insulting. Although the book may contain some valuable and useful facts about Native Americans and their lifestyles, it is impossible to determine how authentic any of them are due to the overt propaganda that is being constantly asserted.

5-0 out of 5 stars History in Pictures

Begins with pre-Columbus and continues through the ages to the90's. A must read for anyone interested in Native american culture andhistory. The author, Gill, does an excellent job in guiding the reader in how to study Native American religious traditions. Whether one is interested in recreational reading only or even for a more academic nature in understanding the subject. This text provides a solid foundation to begin the journey towards understanding the fascinating and complex reality of Native American beliefs. Gill introduces the concept of humanistically approaching the study of the subject through stories and examples, which is more than just entertainment to Native American culture. Gill approaches his study and interpretation in an academically non-traditional sense, contrary to the common anthropological ways. Overall, a good text for introducing anyone interested to Native American religious practices. ... Read more

Book Description
A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY:

Native American History is a breakthrough reference guide, the first book of its kind to recognize and explore the rich, unfolding experiences of the indigenous American peoples as they evolved against a global backdrop. * The construction of pyramids--not only on the banks of the Nile but also on the banks of the Mississippi
* The development of agriculture in both Mesopotamia and Mexico
* The European discovery of a continent already inhabited by some 50 million people
* The Native American influence on the ideas of the European Renaissance
* The unacknowledged advancements in science and medicine created by the civilizations of the new world
* Western Expansion and its impact on Native American land and traditions
* The key contributions Native Americans brought to the Allied victory of World War II
And much more!

4-0 out of 5 stars Chronology of Native American History
If you want to learn about what was going on in the world of Native American Indians this has a timeline that contrasts world history and Native American History. This book is good but I would have liked more detail in the discriptions of the timeline. Perhaps a reference companion to this book be a helpful asset.

5-0 out of 5 stars objective
Judith Nies presents an excellent overview of both native american and european events as they parallel and eventually coincide with one another. Until reading her book, I was unaware of the extent of the brutality of the hispanic history towards the natives of all the areas of the americas; their responsibility for the genocide of millions of natives through a combination of enslavement, warfare and disease, creating a world where the natives preferred to kill their children and commit suicide rather than to continue to live. This is followed by a second tragedy, the establishment of the african slave trade to replace what they destroyed.Perhaps what is most effective in her writing is the objective and factual presentation of a complete history, free of personal or cultural bias.Recommended reading for anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars great referrence book
like the title says, it's a great referrence book for those who wish for a brief overview of native history in the present-day united states as well as much of mesoamerica. good starting off point for further investigation.the great thing about the book is that it not only is a chronology ofnative events (which appear on the right side of a page), it also displaysmany significant events throughout the world (which appear on the left sideof a page) so the reader may gain a greater perspective. also includesshort articles thrown in for good measure and to expand a bit on topicssuch as the iroquois influence on the u.s. constitution, to tenochtitlan(present-day mexico city, site of ancient aztec capital), as well as briefintroductions to certain time periods. not a thorough examination, but anice listing of significant events in native history.recommendednonetheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Educational Book on Native Americans
Many Americans have some Indian Ancestry. We need a book such as this to give us an accurate view of history, and recognize the accomplishments and the tragedies of the Native Americans.Judith Nies did the world a greatservice by documenting these events in an easy to follow format.

4-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading
This book should be required reading, at least for any member of the government who has dealings with Native Americans, if not for every American History class in the country. It is a bit dry stylistically, whichis all that keeps it from five stars, but it contains an amazing wealth ofinformation that balances out the general viewpoint of American history asit is taught in public schools. It should be considered an invaluable assetin any attempt to present a balanced perspective on our country's history.Ignoring the criminally dishonorable way in which those of European descenthave treated the Natives will NOT make it go away, nor even lessen thekarmic debt. Only by learning about and acknowledging the truth can we evenBEGIN to decide what steps need to be taken now and in the future. ... Read more

This book was written with quilters in mind. It has some introductory information on how to use the patterns and a little history. The patterns are taken from or based on indian artistry mainly in pottery, silverwork and basketry. The 100 plus patterns may be copied for personal use only. Using my own imagination, I can picture some of these interesting patterns being used for stenciling on a wall, inspiration for artwork as well as the quilt stitching that it was designed for.I am sure that I will put some of these patterns to use.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
If you already own "Quilting Patterns from Native American Designs" and "Native American Designs for Quilting" do not bother with "Native American Designs 2."As Ms Mori states in the introduction, which it is unlikely most folks read prior to ordering this book, "Native American Designs 2" is a selection of her favorites from the titles shown above. It does have a few "bonus" patterns, but if you're expecting additions to Ms Mori's previous excellent compilations, this isn't it.

this volume not only offers fabulous, wonderful, inspirational designs, it contains a section on developing variations that would be useful for any craft.

the designs could be used for applique, beading, embroidery, and many other media, as well as quilting.some are shown in arrangements--one page even shows three designs incorporated into one. many have been developed for continuous line machine quilting.

this is an excellent resource in any design library.
