Berg and Hannah J. Barnard) in collaboration with AECOS , Inc. (Eric B. Guinther, Joann Fisher, and Hilary Maybaum). This project has been supported by a grant from NOAA / U. S. Coral Reef Initiative The HCRIB is an EndNote Plus bibliographic reference data base which provides reference listings of surveys, studies, technical reports, atlases, and the like on subjects ranging from physical oceanography, biology, taxonomy, water quality, ecology, and reef resources for the main Hawaiian Islands. In gathering references for inclusion, the editors have placed particular emphasis on technical reports (essentially unpublished reports) by corporations, consultants, students, organizations, and government agencies for the reason that these types of studies and surveys are most difficult to track through standard bibliographic data bases. Also, far greater numbers of field surveys and site specific observations are available from this "gray" literature than anywhere else. References listed in this database are limited to marine environments found around the main Hawaiian Islands from the shore out to a depth of about 60 feet.     Extractions: While ocean observations remain one of our principal missions, we have increasingly developed modeling expertise, both analytical and numerical, to support seagoing science and to better understand fundamental ocean processes. The seagoing groups have evolved into a number of technical and scientific groups having specialized equipment. Below we present some of our specialized research working groups: The part of the old Buoy Group that dealt with surface moorings has expanded to include instrumentation (eg. VMCMs, met packages) for use on these moorings. As a result of the WOCE effort, the group has expanded into standardized met packages (IMET) for research and volunteer observing ships. It has also focused on understanding how the surface mixed layer responds to air-sea fluxes.

    Extractions: Located at the confluence of the cold, fresh Labrador Current coming from the north and the warm, saline Gulf Stream coming from the south, Newfoundland is one of the most exciting places in the world for the study of oceanography. It is located at a pivotal point in the world climate system, one of the most important regions for the exchange of heat between the tropical and polar regions. Newfoundland has a growing offshore oil industry operating in a region known for severe storms and frequented by icebergs. The once great Grand Banks fishery is now in a state of collapse. All of these factors make the understanding of the oceans around Newfoundland a matter of great economic and social importance. Ocean science studies have become a focus of research at Memorial University and activity is expected to accelerate over the coming years. The establishment of the Physical Oceanography Group in 1979 and its subsequent growth to a position of international standing demonstrates this commitment.     Extractions: Department of Physics Our primary research interests are in describing the state of the global ocean in space and time and understanding the dynamic and thermodynamic processes that maintain this state. Ultimately, we are motivated to understand the ocean's role in Earth's climate and the physical analogies between the ocean and other planetary atmospheres. A variety of models are used for studying the interaction between the atmosphere and oceans. This interaction is strongest in the tropical regions, particularly over the Pacific ocean, where it gives rise to `El Nino' conditions and leads to climate variability on time-scales of a few months to a few years. The ultimate object of our work is to test the predictability of the tropical ocean-atmosphere system. Our models range from fully comprehensive models of the atmosphere and ocean to models of intermediate complexity that retain only the essential physics. In addition, models are being used to understand the nature of the decadal variability of the wind-driven and thermohaline circulations of the ocean and their climate manifestations. Much of the work is carried out in collaboration with other major modelling centres. Understanding the key mechanisms controlling the rate at which the ocean interior is refreshed by surface water is a critical issue facing oceanographers interested in climate. A blend of methods is used to approach this problem, including numerical models of the oceanic circulation on parallel computers, observations of dissolved transient tracers (CFCs and radiosotopes) from research cruises and non-linear statistical techniques. The combination leads to improved knowledge of the general ciruculation of the ocean and exchange with the atmosphere and hence enhanced understanding of the ocean's role in shaping the Earth's climate.

    Extractions: at Dalhousie University The story of our Department is one of growth and accruing influence, both nationally and internationally, in the fields of oceanographic research and education. From a mere 10 faculty at its founding in 1971, we now number 19 full-time faculty, with many additional joint, cross and adjunct appointments. Research grants and contracts now exceed $6.0 Million per year, some 35% of the total research funds raised by the Faculty of Science. Arguably, we can be considered Canada’s premier Department of Oceanography. This increasing prominence is reflected in past and current housing of the Canadian offices of large international projects, including the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS), the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE), and the Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS). In the early 1990s we were fortunate to house one of the first Networks of Centers for Excellence, known as OPEN (Open Production Enhancement Network), and today we are breaking new ground with the CFI-funded Center for Marine Environmental Prediction , which aims at a predictive understanding of changes in the marine environment through both modelling and new technology.

    Extractions: The Division of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography (MPO) of the Rosenstiel School is engaged in research and graduate instruction in the physical processes governing motion and composition of the ocean and atmosphere. The program ranges from direct observation to theoretical and numerical modeling of the earth-atmosphere system. Located on the Virginia Key Campus of the University of Miami, the School is adjacent to NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratories ( AOML ) and Southeast Fisheries Science Center ( SEFC ).
