5-0 out of 5 stars wow
Poor Bob is shocked to discover that he is a palindrome, and what is more, so is almost everyone in his family. No matter what he tries it seems he cannot escape them; there are palindromes everywhere. The cover promises more than 101 palindromes hidden in the book. Check out the palindromes embedded in the dedication by these two clever guys. Children (and adults) will have a great time finding them. Don't overlook the book titles on the shelves, the baby's gurgle, and the angry sound of the truck horn. The bold pictures underscore Bob's frantic feelings. A great book for teaching wordplay.

This was a thoroughly delightful book which my 6-year old grandson enjoyed immensely particularly so since his grandfather's name is also a palindrome. It was humourous, clever and very educational.

When both your past and future spell fear.

Award-winning author Stuart Woods has crafted a masterful novel no reader will soon forget. For years, Liz Barwick has been battered by her brutal husband, a famous pro football player. 4-0 out of 5 stars Enticing
An all-too-common story of an abused wife, married to a football star. After her divorce, Liz escaped to Cumberland Island off the coast of Georgia. She gets tangled up with an eccentric old man who owns the island and his family who are strange in a provocative way.As the plot thickens, her abusive ex-husband finds her, but the story takes a twisted turn with her new founded family.

2-0 out of 5 stars Read Chief's by Stuart Woods instead.
I can't imagine anyone giving this book 5 stars, or even 4 for that matter. The plots were unbelievable. The characters were unbelievable. The writing was mediocre at best.I found the book to be a waste of time.I did finish it, thinking it would get better, but it never did.No one gets away with murder so easily, and it insulted my intelligence. No one runs around in a Tarzan suit either.Give me a break.Read Chief's instead by Stuart Woods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Read
Although I love Stuart Wood's Stone Barrington novels, I must admit that once in awhile I like to read his other books that are based on different characters. This book was one of the fastest, most thrilling books I have read in a long time.

It focuses on Liz who is nearly beaten and raped to death by her husband who happens to be a famous football player who is drugged out on steroid and drugs. This books gives a creepy description of what steroids can do to an average person.Anyways, Liz escapes to Cumberland Island in order to get away from her vengeful ex-husband.On this island she gets involved with the Drummond family who have a few skeletons in their closet. As if that is not enough, Liz's husband is on the rampage looking for her to kill her. Will he find her? What is the secret between the Drummond twins, Hamish and Keir?Read this book and you will find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps you guessing!
I've read many of Stuart Woods books and enjoyed them very much.Palidrome was more than that though. Some friends and I shared a library copy of the unabridged recording of this book on our shift at work. Why do I mention this?Well, it's simple. This book was amazing! We were left spellbound as a group, each of us poking and proding each other all night as things developed in this story. The story is emotional as we were along on this journey with these characters. So many twists and turns left us gasping with those surprised, "OH's"that had our coworkers staring at us.The editorial comments above tell the basics of the story, so I wanted to share the experience of actually reading or listening to it being told. This story had us wrapped up in what was going on for the two nights we listened to it we probably worked more focused than we'd done before simply because our concentration was so involved with this story.
Personally this book had me crying my eyes out at work!I sat at my desk bawling my head off and happily doing so because I enjoyed this book so much.Unlike some of the other reviewers I wasn't expecting the twists and turns of the story, so it was great to have friends just as surprised as I was going through it with me.
Even a couple of years later we still remind each other every so often about this book and tell others about it.This story sticks in your head and makes you care about what is happening to the characters.I may have liked Stuart Woods before this book, but after this I love the way his mind works!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
It had a few slow spots, but all-in-all it was very entertaining. There are several things going on at one time, such as the "crazy ex" and a mystery surrounding the twins that caught me off guard.I will definitely try other books by this author. ... Read more

Palindromes.Hard to write, fun to read, especially in the expert hands of Jon Agee.

A palindrome is a word or phrase that is spelled the same way forwards or backwards, as in "Go hang a salami!I'm a lasagna hog!", which has to be one of the longest and most complicated palindromes in existence.

Mr. Agee has collected some fantastically fun and funny palindromes in this collection illustrated by the author. There is a picture of a lion on a sunny beach with a bottle of "lion oil" behind him.Winnie the Pooh is doing the hula hoop (it's "Pooh's hoop", of course!!).My personal favorite (and an exceptionally long palindrome) is of an inventor in a room full of switches, gadgets and wires. In the middle of the room sits a tiny box playing music. He exclaims, arms out, "I madam, I made a radio! So I dared!Am I mad, am I?!"Go ahead, spell it backwards...

In a world where good English skills are swiftly becoming a rarity and few folk seem interested in grammar or word games, Mr. Agee's book is a breath of fresh air.At times, the illustrations fit the palindromes so perfectly that you almost forget that these are special sentences that are quite difficult to create, and the read more like a comic strip.

Kudos to Mr. Agee for not only playing about with words to create Palindromes, but for publishing some for those struggling folk (like myself) who can't seem to come up with any of our own!!Readers may also want to check out his other book, "So Many Dynamos!"

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book of Its Kind I Know
This short, inexpensive book contains the best collection of anagrams and palindromes I have ever seen.My copy is dog-eared from repeated use.The book contains an enormous amount of top-notch palindromes that are far from over-familiar.Some samples:

* A new order began; a more Roman age bred Rowena.
* A dog, a pant, a panic in a Patna pagoda.

Those samples may strike you as silly and meaninglesss, in which you are not a palindrome person, and this book is not for you.Or they may make you want to see more, in which case you should definitely buy this book. The palindromes by J.A. Lindon, which make up the book's grand finale chapter, are amazing tours de force.

Trust me -- this book has the goods. If you are a wordplay enthusiast, you'll love it.If you know one (perhaps a co-worker), it could make a great inexpensive gift.Strongly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for wordplay enthusiasts.
Howard W. Bergerson, former editor of Word Ways: The Journal of Recreational Linguistics, presents more than a thousand anagrams and hundreds of palindromes (with sources, where known).

This volume (aninspiration for many books including Michaelsen's "Words at Play"and Jon Agee's collections) is a must for wordplay enthusiasts, especiallythose with a penchant for these particular curiosities.

You will get yourmoney's worth on this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars was it a rat I saw?
Palindromes are, of course, words or phrases that are spelled the same backwards or forwards."So Many Dynamos!" is a palindrome as well-- go ahead, spell it backwards!!

Mr. Agee has collected some fantastically complicated and funny palindromes in this collection. All of them are illustrated, which add so much to the palindrome itself. For example, two rugged cowboys are running away from a huge pair of pants."Massive Levi's, Sam!" one man shouts to the other.Another of my favorites is of two scientists gazing through a massively huge microscope at something on a small slide. "snot or protons?" asks one scientist.

Making palindromes is no easy task, though there are hundreds of them.Mr. Agee has proven himself brilliant by not only putting them together, but illustrating some rather difficult ones that then make perfect sense (I'll let you find out what "No!Put egg getup on!" means...!!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever and entertaining
In any event, Jon Agee's extremely clever palindromes and accompanying illustrations are absolutely fantastic. My personal favorite is the papaya war, but you'll have to read it to understand. :)

3-0 out of 5 stars A delightful book
Not the best book you'll ever read, but certainly somethig fun to pick up for someone's birthday, a young child, or an old child :) who's easily giggled by wordplay and cartoons. Eegad, Agee! Not another palindrome book!

Well-known author and illustrator Jon Agee has been playing with words again, and now a third collection of clever, absurd, and hilarious reversible phrases is the result. These palindromes and their accompanying cartoons will inspire laughs long after first sight. One may feel compelled to go through the book again backwards -- appropriately palindromically -- to revisit his or her favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must if you love wordplay
While I took this book from the children's shelf of our local library, this "older" kid still loved it. The palindromes are funny and the cartoons that accompany them are well drawn and relate to the palindrome. My favorite is the extension of the classic, "A man, a plan, a canal, Panama" , "A man, a plan, a cat, a bar, a cap, a mall, a ball, a map, a car, a bat, a canal: Panama."Palindromes that are a sensible statement are not easy to write, so the author is to be commended in his ingenuity in constructing such wonders, especially some of the longer ones.
This is a book that can clearly be enjoyed by children of all ages and as soon as I am done with this review, I will be handing it over to my children.

5-0 out of 5 stars More wordsmithing from the Palindrome master!!
Jon Agee may be best known for his illustration of children's books ("The Halloween House", "If Snow Falls").However, he has also proven himself a proficient wordsmith, easily and playfully pulling words all apart and putting them together."Sit on a Potato Pan" is one of five books delighting in the oddities English spelling.

Palindromes are words or phrases that are spelled the same way forwards as backwards.Take the title of the book and spell it backwards, and it's the exact same title!!These things are not easy to create, and the longer the phrase the more difficult it is to both spell backwards and still make sense. The fact that "Sit...Otis!" is one of THREE books of palindromes by Mr. Agee only proves his genius at manipulating words and letters.

Like his other two books of palindromes, "So Many Dynamos!" and "Go Hang a Salami! I'm a Lasagna Hog!" (now THERE'S one that must have taken a few days to create!!), "Sit...Otis!" is illustrated with wonderful drawings that make the palindrome live and sparkle. For example, in one of my personal favorites, two gents in the Old West are looking at a wanted poster.Pictures of large cats are on the wanted poster, and one man says to the other, "darn ocelots stole Conrad". Another is of three men staring at 9 little pieces of scribbled on paper. They make their own notes about them, and the caption is "some men interpret nine memos".

Needless to say, these things are not easy to write!!Especially the longer, more complicated ones like "naive was I ere I saw Evian" and the one that makes the title of this book. While not a book geared for young children, students in, say, third grade and above would no doubt get a kick out of these and other palindromes. With Mr. Agee as a guide, it's a perfect opportunity for students to go on and create their own. What else is Otis capable of?? ... To aficionados and wordsmiths, palindromes--phrases that read the same backward and forward, such as "bird rib" or "senile felines"--are more than just wordplay; they have a special kind of sense and serve as reminders that all language is only a human construct. There are now many palindrome collections on the market, none more comprehensive than this volume of 3,500 palindromes by the founding editor of Games magazine. "Never odd or even," this is a book to amuse and instruct in the riches of the language.Book Description
S. Wordrow's Palindrome Encyclopedia revealed and interpreted by Michael Donner. "Packs a record-breaking 35,000 cross-referenced palindromes into a tongue-in-cheek reference book that is a must-have for crossword puzzlers, word lovers, or anyone who loves the absurd."--Houston Tribune; "Silliness is the unabashed point in these 400-plus pages."--Sun-Times (Chicago); "This is surely the most thorough survey of words that come and go the same way."--William Safire, The New York Times Magazine; "Har-har! 5-0 out of 5 stars An exhaustive and amusing effort-- impressive
Donner deserves high praise for having compiled this item-- I enjoy consulting it from time to time, and my son picks it up when he's looking for a chuckle.Others (below) criticize it for perhaps containing too many examples, and some that seem borderline, but I appreciate the full gamut. Is this book for everyone? No, clearly not-- word nuts may only represent a tiny corner of the world, but we need such books to keep us amused! This one more than fills the bill.

4-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding linguistic mind-trip
Word-gamers, punners, palindromists, and the simply weird will enjoy this book. It's full of mind-twisting and paradigm-bending palindromes, some of which are old chestnuts (such as Napoleon's lament "Able was ere I saw Elba" or the more complicated "'Naomi, sex at noon taxes', I moan") while others are truly bizarre. Moreover, the author plucks palindromes out of heretofore unexplored territory (airport codes, geographical locations, and the like).

Interestingly, the book is not limited to palindromes; it also features some anagrams as well as word-squares.

Don't expect to read this in one sitting.Your mind will turn to mush if you try to do so!

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixture of good and sappy
There are spots of brilliance in this book, and unfortunately much larger spots of sappy material, such as codes for airports or peculiar numbers that happen to be palindromes.Palindromes are an art form, perhaps the most constrained art form, and some, like those of J. A. Lindon, are sublime. The author himself contributes a few very good original examples. He also slavishly quotes a number of other sources and in particular is treats everything by Lindon as a work of genius.Lindon was admittedly good, but not quite that good. The author's scholarly work in finding the sources of famous palindromes is not superficial. The worst feature of the book is that the author cannot resist adding an inane 'explanation' after almost all entries. The book wouldhave been better with about half its content excised. ... Language skills will fly through the air with the greatest of ease as kids join in The Circus of Words. Children of all ages are delighted by anagrams, palindromes, acrostics, alliteration, riddles, and puns, yet few books on wordplay are addressed to middle-schoolers. This creative and challenging activity book shows kids how to juggle letters to become ringmasters of wordplay. “The Shrinking Spotlight” shows how larger words become smaller words when certain letters are removed. “Clown Cars” introduces the idea of words hiding within words, and “The Acro Bat” and “Silver Spoonerisms” show off letter clusters that change from one word to another. The whole bandwagon is here, enabling kids, who are natural language enthusiasts, to cavort through that endless entertainment, the English language.
