This compelling book marries together a study of a great period in the life of Jim Clark with the history of a great British marque, featuring in particular the famous Lotus 25, from its golden 1963 World Championship-winning year, through subsequent owners and crashes until the remains are discovered and the gallant old charger is restored to its original specification.

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical
Especially for European fans like myself, who don't know the history of American grand prix drivers and cars, this is an execelent book.I've just loved it. Five stars, at least.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're a fan of Grand Prix racing, youmust have this!
Over the course of modern Formula One racing since 1950, there have been two publicly successful and one publicly unsuccessful U.S. Grand Prix racer, but did you know that there are more than 140 American men and one woman who have challenged in Grand Prix since 1906?Tim Considine spent seven years of his life in research for this volume, which includes biographies of many of the racers, period photos by some of the top photographers, including Pete Biro, Bernard Cahier and Dave Friedman, and a time line history of U.S. drivers, teams and tracks in Grand Prix.As a reference alone, this book is worth having in anyone's GP collection, but as a read, it's a "can't put it down" book. You're going to love this. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Only for the photos
It's worth ony for the photos, which are great. The text is brief and adds almost nothing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
Man, you can find the information (the terrible brief information) about each of the drivers here in any cheap Internet web site!

2-0 out of 5 stars JUST FOR THE PAYCHECK
It's sad when an expert newsman like Alan Henry writes such a weak book about great F-1 champions. He can ( and indeed have !! ) write much better books than this one, where the photos save the day ...

1-0 out of 5 stars THE ONLY THING WORTHWHILE ARE THE PHOTOS
Alan Henry is one of the greatest car racing newsman of all times. Butsometimes he releases these cheaps books, made of photos and almost nonetext, just to get some easy money ( I guess ). THe result is this emptybrief biography of F-1 world champions, that will serve only for beginners.

2-0 out of 5 stars A thin but still pleasing set of F1 "profiles in courage"
With 100+ photos but only 4-5 pages on each of 13 Formula One World Champions, this Alan Henry book is neither comprehensive nor detailed. Yet it still manages to delve behind the helmets and provide some rivetingmoments in the careers of each of these tremendously gifted athletes.Henry's profile of Englishman James Hunt is particularly good, but manywill question the logic (if any) that went into selecting the drivers forthis book, since it leaves out so many great F1 champions. ... Customer Reviews (2)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent-- an intimate look at the sport and its people
Gaillard skips the simple sensationalism that usually accompanies Nascar writings, choosing instead to tell a real story. He explores the history of the Nascar culture, the people that comprise it and the sport'ssurprising ability to get in your blood for good.

4-0 out of 5 stars A NASCAR Season through one driver's eyes
In Kyle Petty, Frye Gaillard has the most interesting driver on the NASCAR circuit, and he makes the most of it.This is a well-written, intelligent, and surprisingly candid recounting of a Winston Cup season. If you've ever wondered what the drivers say when the TV cameras are off, you should read this book - instead of the usual "I gotta thank Goodyear for puttin' an awesome set of tires under me...", you get lines like, "There was a little turd driving number fifteen that ran all over me."If you're a race fan, you'll love it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best Schumi biography I've read
"Schumacher: The Life of the New Formula I Champion" by Timothy Collings is my absolute favourite book about Schuey! It is comprehensive, profound and I think the writer has a lot of sympathy to Michael, yet he manages to view critical things from an objective point of view. It's only problem is that the book is old (it was closed at the end of 1995), but it is so well-written and interesting that at the end of the day it doesn't really matter.
I can only recommend it to every Schumacher and Formula One fan! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What else can I say?
The sad fact is that, despite the popularity of F1 now, nobody since has demonstrated Gilles' control.

This book is a good representation of him- it doesn't fawn on him, he's not without his flaws and I think it does a pretty balanced job of showing all sides of the man. If you're into Villeneuve's style, and want to know more about him, you will not do better.

In Montréal on GP weekend, they've a display of Gilles' suit on Crescent Street. The guy looks all of 5 feet all...a tiny giant among drivers...

5-0 out of 5 stars Vroooom
Very well written story on the life of Gilles and full of tons of facts on his races and the way he lived his life. I still can't believe he lived that long while reading this book . Check out Curtis Turners book " Full Throttle " for a perfectly written story that's imposible to put down , with an emotional endind on probably the first " Intimidator " . You won't be disappointed .

5-0 out of 5 stars best book I have ever read
This book is impossible to put down, if you are or are not a
Gilles fan this is a must. The book is very well written with
tons of insite to his years of racing as well as lots of
liitle known information about him and his family. I found myself
making time to get a few more pages in before I would have to
put it down. I was at six of the races mentioned in the book,
Watkins Glen and Canada, not only did it bring back great
memories, but I learned more about those races than I knew then
when I was there live. Buy it and god bless Gilles

5-0 out of 5 stars The best racing book ever written?
I've read a lot of racing books, but never one better than this.It is at the same time gripping, compelling and very well written.

Donaldson's masterpiece is recommend without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let me be clear...
Let me be clear: this is simply the best racing driver biography ever written. It's complete, well written, touching and objective at the same time, respectful to the dead. It's an amazing book. No doubt the writer is a big Villeneuve fan, but he managed to avoid being totally partial.
It's full oof data, anecdotes, funny parts, tragic parts, competition, brief technical analysys of the cars, a lot of famous drivers in diverse categories... Well, this is the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great glossy insight into the man behind the glory
1992 Formula 1 champion Nigel Mansell is one of Britain's racing legends, his duels with Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet fresh in people's memories. Williams' wheelchair-bound boss Frank Williams writes the foreword, and the two have achieved success hand-in-hand. With the help of veteran racing author Derick Allsop, he has written his most authoritative work on his success. Sections look at his personality and life off the track, which conveys him as a classic family man, the Williams team and what made it tick, the way a race weekend works (fascinating information for all F1 fans), the drives eh has raced against (unsurprisingly his comments on his 'Gang of 4' rivals aren't always complementary) and each race individually. Derick writes a section on his 1992 championship triumph, looking at each of the races in which he emphatically achieved the dream it looked like he would be denied. A great look at a great racer. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A lucky one.....
HIll's history is one of those success histories that keeps on marvelling us. The guy would have virtually no chance against Ayrton Senna in Williams-Renault, back in 1994. But Senna died, and Hill, a driver who had never achieved absolutely nothing in the lesser formulas, suddenly became William's Number One.

And such a Number One he became. Learning fast, he almost secured te World Tittle already in 1994, had not MIchael Schumacher played dirty in the Australian Grand Prix. (do you need any other proof that the machine is much more important than the driver in modern Formula One? Hill was in his second season, had never showed any signs of above-average skill, and was almost the World Champion - courtesy ofWilliams-Renault, not his skills)

In the following years, Hill became the main contender against Germany's robot Michael Schumacher, the most victorious driver ever in F-1. And won his Championship in 1996.

This book gives a lesson: you can learn with the passing of time, it's never late to believe you can be succesfull in something you desire a lot (ok, I admit that being the son of Graham Hill would help you a lot...) ... Read more
