Book Description

Since recording its first AIDS cases in 1983, Tanzania has reported nearly 90,000 more to the World Health Organization—more than any other country in Africa. As AIDS spread, the devastating syndrome came to be known simply as ugonjwa huo: "that disease."

The AIDS epidemic has forced Africans to reflect upon the meaning of traditional ideas and practices related to sexuality and fertility, and upon modernity and biomedicine. In A Plague of Paradoxes, anthropologist Philip Setel observes Tanzania's Chagga people and their attempts to cope with and understand AIDS—the latest in a series of crises over which they feel they have little, if any, control.

Timely and well-researched, A Plague of Paradoxes is an extended case study of the most serious epidemic of the twentieth century and the cultural circumstances out of which it emerged. It is a unique book that brings together anthropology, demography, and epidemiology to explain how a particular community in Africa experiences AIDS.

Editorial Review

Book Description
In Performance and Politics in Tanzania, LauraEdmondson examines how politics, social values, and gender are expressed onstage. Now a disappearing tradition, Tanzanian popular theatre integratescomic sketches, acrobatics, melodrama, song, and dance to produce livelycommentaries on what it means to be Tanzanian. These dynamic shows inviteimprovisation and spontaneous and raucous audience participation as theyexplore popular sentiments. Edmondson asserts that these performancesoverturn the boundary between official and popular art and offer a new wayof thinking about African popular culture. She discusses how the blurringof state agendas and local desires presents a charged environment for theexploration of Tanzanian political and social realities: What is themeaning of democracy and who gets to define it? Who is in power, and how ispower exposed or concealed? What is the role of tradition in apostsocialist state? How will the future of the nation be negotiated? Thisengaging book provides important insight into the complexity of popularforms of expression during a time of political and social change in EastAfrica. ... Read more

Book Description
The common charge laid against missionaries that they aredestroyers ofAfrican culture is shown to be untrue of themissionaries treated in thisbook, who worked with considerablesuccess to integrate Christianity andAfrican culture. The authorexamines the endeavours of the missionaries from the perspectiveofthe local Christians, who were not themselves interested inAfricanizationas such. One can thus find some missionaries defending- against the electedAfrican Church leadership - the right of theChagga Christians to circumcisetheir daughters, and NyakyusaChristians refusing to use African tunes becausethe missionaries -influenced by National Socialism - professed both love forAfricanculture and White superiority. This informative book, based on localand archival research at DaressalamUniversity, is eminently readable. It features the first historical studyof Bruno Gutmann, and providescase study material for teaching. ... Book Description
Focusing on the growing transnational community of Ismailis (Muslim Shi'a followers of the Aga Khan), this study analyzes the transnational and cultural characteristics of the Ismaili social service network in the context of state/society relations. There are approximately 20 million Ismailis worldwide in over 20 countries throughout the world, and they have developed--under the auspices of the Aga Khan--a sophisticated private sector nonprofit social service network of hospitals and schools that serves the health care and education needs of Ismailis and non-Ismailis. Based on research and interviews conducted in Europe and Africa from 1992-1995, this study shows how a strong society can contribute significantly to the social service goals of developing nations. It also provides information on the Ismailis of Tanzania which has not previously been available in the west, and so will be of interest to scholars of comparative politics, religious, development theory, and African Studies. ... Book Description
Full parliamentary democracy did not come quickly or easily to Tanzania. In 1962, the first constitution of Tanzania as an independent republic shifted power from parliament to the executive: specifically to the presidency. In 1965, the interim constitution further eroded the powers of parliament in favour of a one party state, controlled by the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU). Parliament became little more than a token, rubber-stamping organisation. This multi-contributory study traces the development of multi-party democracy in Tanzania from the appointment of the first two chiefs to Tanganyika's colonial Legislative Council in 1945 to the present day. It highlights the struggle for supremacy between parliament and the executive during the period from 1968 to 1992, when parliament began to assert itself as a vibrant multi-party institution. ... Book Description

Since its founding in 1964, the United Republic of Tanzania has used music, dance, and other cultural productions as ways of imagining and legitimizing the new nation. Focusing on the politics surrounding Swahili musical performance, Kelly Askew demonstrates the crucial role of popular culture in Tanzania's colonial and postcolonial history.

As Askew shows, the genres of ngoma (traditional dance), dansi (urban jazz), and taarab (sung Swahili poetry) have played prominent parts in official articulations of "Tanzanian National Culture" over the years. Drawing on over a decade of research, including extensive experience as a taarab and dansi performer, Askew explores the intimate relations among musical practice, political ideology, and economic change. She reveals the processes and agents involved in the creation of Tanzania's national culture, from government elites to local musicians, poets, wedding participants, and traffic police. Throughout, Askew focuses on performance itself—musical and otherwise—as key to understanding both nation-building and interpersonal power dynamics.
