Extractions: Home Project Update Partner Profiles Training Centers ... An Introduction to Ukraine and Ukrainian Local Government GEOGRAPHY (BY REGIONS) Transcarpathia (Zakarpattya): On the western side of the Carpathian mountains, close to Hungary and Slovakia. They are screened from the northern and eastern winds by the mountains, and warm winters allow the growth of grapes and the production of wines. Carpathian Mountains: These are located in Western Ukraine and resemble the Alps. There is some skiing here, but the tourist potential is largely untapped. Western Ukraine (including Carpathians): In general this area is hilly and highly forested, and there is a serious lack of land for agricultural use and traditionally a high level of unemployment. This territory did not become part of the Soviet Union until 1939 (it was part of Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Romania in the prewar period), and therefore people there have a living memory of local government. Many Westerners of Ukrainian ancestry trace their roots to this region. Polissya: Sandy with many forests and marshes. This region is poor in mineral resources. The main agricultural products are potatoes, flax, and barley. The Chernobyl nuclear plant is in this region, and an area of 20 miles around the plant is so polluted with radioactive materials that no one lives or farms there.

Extractions: Ukraine is growing as a popular destination for tourists and Travellers Volunteers alike, and Kiev is rapidly becoming the city to see in Eastern Europe. It's even beginning to compete with Moscow in that respect. Since its independence, Ukraine, and Kiev in particular, has opened up and become an extremely friendly, hospitable country. The people are very sociable and charming, and in fact, socialising plays a big part in Ukrainian life! Current WEATHER in Kiev Ukrainians are famous for their humour, melodiousness and their artistic handicraft talents such as weaving, painting, wood-carving and ceramics. But mostly Ukrainians have a sensitivity for working with the land, which they love with a passion. Ukraine is mostly a level, treeless plain calls " steppe ". There are the Crimean Mountains in the Crimean peninsula and the Carpathians in the west, but they are not very high. Mixed forests of pine and fir-trees, beeches, limes, oaks and elms cover the mountains, but the thickest woods can still be found in the northern part of the republic, in Volyn. Stylized ceramic female figurines and pottery decorated with meandering designs in ocher, black and white date back from the Trypillian culture (4th - 2nd millenia B.C.) and there are
