3-0 out of 5 stars I guess you either like it or you don't
In reading the reviews before I purchased this book, I almost didn't buy it, but I decided everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It wasn't the greatest book I've read, but it wasn't the worst, believe me they are out there.
Anyway, I liked Jane, she was self-assured and strong in the areas she was most comfortable in and those that made her second guess herself, she became her own worst enemy.I liked Hellion, he was your typical rake. This is a good read, two lonely people from different sides of the social spectrum, finding each other and falling in love.I guess that's what we all wish could happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun
I liked this book. The plot was familiar but the characters managed to make it unique.Hellion was a rake but he possessed a genuine understanding of his failings and a ability to laugh at himself.Jane is capable of forging her own path, without the assitance of others, but she still has a hint of vulnerbility.

The chemistry seemed to work well and the romance was sweet without being cloying.

All in all a good read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not The Strongest Read...
Ms. Raleigh's latest effort "Some Like It Wicked" was not the strongest read in the world but it did have it's moments where it entertained. The problem that I found with this read was the fact that modern day thoughts and ideas kept popping up.This was derailing for the reader.

Jane Middleton has gone to London for the season with the hopes of finding a husband. This unremarkable girl knows her short comings and won't let them stand in her way. So when the perfect chance to finally be noticed presents itself, Jane is smart enough to act on it.The fact that she has to make Hellion Caufield the Ton's biggest rake help her is little to no big deal. She has something he needs, he has something she wants...what could be easier?

Hellion is now in dun territory and his prospects are looking rather dim.He has no desire to enter the marriage mart and he finds the young marriageble misses less than...inspiring.So when plain Jane comes to him with a shocking business deal his first answer is no way...but Jane is fresh, and unafraid to admit to her faults and the jade finds himself being drawn to the very thing he doesn't want.A romance. But will helping Jane help him or will he find himself in more trouble than he thought possible?

Jane and Hellion had the potential of being wonderful characters but Ms. Raleigh just didn't cash in all of the potential that was there.Add to this the concept of a regency miss traveling to London sans chaperone, attending balls and other society functions sans chaperone, and having a head for business (okay not that big of a deal but still) and you get the picture of modern day thoughts going into this historical read.In the end this is not a read I'd avoid as Ms. Raleigh is a fine storyteller but this effort was lackluster in attempt and execution.

Official Reviewer for Romance Design

3-0 out of 5 stars Just my opinion
This is the first book I've read by Deborah Raleigh but I can say it won't be the last.
I believe her characters are well drawn and it's nice to see a heroine strong enough to take care of herself and bold enough to proposition London's most notorious rake. It's also a treat to have the hero fall in love with the heroine's "qualities" instead of her ravishing beauty.
Their relationship wonderfully demonstrates the belief that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I believe that is what romance is all about.
So for anyone intersted in reading a witty, sexy, and sincere romance...don't hesitate to pick this one up!

2-0 out of 5 stars a very disappointing read
Deborah Raleigh's "Some Like It Wicked" was a truly disappointing read for me. I cannot say whether it was because the plot was executed in a rather lackluster manner, or whether it was because it was full of cliches, or whether it was because every chapter started out with a "Dear Diary" entry which I found irritating (how many Regency-era diaries really started with a "Dear Diary" entry for goodness sake?)

The daughter of a cit and an aristocrat (and herself a businesswoman), twenty-three year old Jane Middleton has decided that it is time she married; and so (without any introductions, connections or chaperone) Jane makes for London, sure that her immense wealth will allow her entree to the ton, and where she thinks she will be able to find a sensible husband who will be willing to overlook her lack of good looks and her background for her wealth. To her chagrin, Jane finds herself being quite overlooked by the young blades and soon finds herself consigned to being a wallflower. And then one night, while at a ball, she overhears a conversation that gives her an audacious idea. "Hellion" Cauldfield, a dashing rogue much sought after by the London drawing room hostesses, is in need of funds: he was his uncle's heir; but the old man has married a young wife in hopes of fathering a son, and the Hellion's creditors have been dogging his footsteps ever since. Hellion needs to get some money soon or else he will end up in prison. Jane's proposition to Hellion is that he help her become fashionable (by conducting a flirtation with her) for money to pay off his creditors. And while Hellion is leery about accepting Jane's proposal, he finds himself agreeing to this plan. What Jane hadn't counted on, however, was her unexpected susceptibility to the handsome rogue's seductive ways. Very quickly she realises that she will have to protect her vulnerable heart all else end up as another of Hellion's casualties...

The plot of "Some Like It Wicked" is one that many romance readers would be familiar with. And while there is nothing wrong with an author using an oft rendered storyline, most authors usually add a little twist here and there, or else give us characters that are memorable, likable and engaging. This really didn't happen here. Which was a shame because Deborah Raleigh had provided both Jane and Hellion with backgrounds (both led lonely childhoods because of who their parents were) that would have made this book a much deeper and more complex read. As it stands, the book follows along the very predictable lines of Hellion trying to seduce Jane into compliance and her, resisting him every inch if the way, until a BIG MISUNDERSTANDING develops between them. Fortunately, Ms Raleigh works around this plot gambit quickly so that the two talk things through and work things out. The thing that really grated though was how the author could have allowed for her heroine to think that she could just turn up in London sans chaperone, connections and introductions and actually partake in the festivities that constitute the Season? Did Jane grow up in a vacuum perhaps? And even if Jane's mother had died before imparting any knowledge about the ways of the ton to her daughter, shouldn't the fact that Jane had grown up neither being excepted by her father's friends nor her mother's relatives have given Jane a hint that it would not be so easy to crash the ton?

Were there any pluses then to "Some Like It Wicked?" Well, I rather liked Jane in spite of the dire diary entries. In spite of being a very sensible and capable young woman, Jane had a very vulnerable side. And the author did a first rate job of showing this in Jane's confused reactions and feelings for Hellion. (Hellion as a character was pretty much the stock rogue/rake-with-the-heart-of-gold hero). It was just a shame that the book was really worthy of a heroine like Jane. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars To Good to Be True Debut
I can't believe TO TEMPT A SCOTSMAN is Victoria Dahl's first book! The story is excellent, the characters are compelling, and the sex is hot.Dahl is a great writer and I can't wait to read more from her.

I am a big fan of sensual Regencies, and this book fits the bill.In some ways it is a departure, however, because the heroine is so non-traditional.I salute Dahl for creating a character who is unabashedly sexual and knows what she wants.Although she is actually quite chaste, her reputation has been ruined, so she feels she has nothing to lose by acting on her attraction. When she decides she wants the handsome Scotsman, she propositions him.Several times.

The story was touching, romantic, and fast-paced.Can't wait for Dahl's next book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hero and heroine who were flawed but deeply in love made this story powerful.
I liked both the hero and heroine in this book.Even when they made some pretty messy mistakes, their regret was genuine. They each had a lot to learn about how to be a couple.Their fears for the future were realistic, and their resulting actions made sense.Dahl never fell into any of the typical, overused themes that we read repeatedly. The characters were not built like gods/ goddesses.Neither was totally right, while the other was totally wrong. Both were, to put it simply, human.

Alexandra is a recluse.During her coming out season, she was caught kissing a man.Her reputation destroyed, there was nothing for her to do but retreat from society.Rather than wallow in self- pity, Alex has found happiness in caring for her older brother's estate. She may be the sister of a duke, but she is not afraid to get her hands dirty in the stables.Loving his sister, no matter what her faults might be, the duke gives her the freedom to live as she pleases.

Collin resents having to leave Scotland in search of his brother's killer. The last thing he wants to do is speak with the woman who caused his younger brother, John, to be shot to death in a duel for her honor. He believes the same as the rest of society... that she must be a harlot.Upon meeting her in person, he begins to doubt what he has heard about her from the gossips. When she agrees to help him capture John's killer, Collin knows that she can't be the selfish wench he thought her to be.

Alex can't stop thinking about Collin.Even after he has returned to Scotland, she decides she will have him.Men of honor have been rare in London society. She doesn't want to give up her freedom, but wants to experience physical affection. Her reputation already destroyed, Alex feels she has nothing to lose.

Collin has spent his life behaving with honor and good judgement. When Alex tempts him into meeting with her, he decides that just this once he will put his restraints aside and live for his own happiness. What can it hurt? She's certainly no innocent.

As circumstances of the meeting unfold, both Alex and Collin find it hard to keep their physical relationship and their emotions separate. When Alex falls ill, Collin will not leave her until he knows she is safe and well.Once she is healed, he will do all he can to convince her to marry him.Neither has ever professed their love for one another, but both feel it to their very souls. They will soon learn how foolish it is to keep such a secret.Resentment and suspicion threaten to destroy their fragile bond. All the while, John's killer hides close by, waiting for a chance to get revenge for his exile.

Kiss of the Highlander (The Highlander Series, Book 4)
The Dark Highlander (The Highlander Series, Book 5) Two books out of a long series. These two stand alone, and are great together. The rest of the series is good, but not as good these books about a set of yummy twin Scotsmen.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but needed more
This was a nice story but it could have been better. The story and the writing both seemed disjointed, not enough description and explanation so it was easy to find myself lost in a scene.Needed much more depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read!
What a great story! Another Zebra debut author scores big-time with To Tempt a Scotsman. If you like lusty historicals with a smart heroine and a hero you will find hard to resist, pick up this book!

They might be relatively new to the office, and even a little reluctant to partner up, but they know that when a Senator's son is killed in a car accident, they're going to need to work hard to determine that it was an accident. After a talk with the Medical Examiner and the Chief of Police in the county where the accident took place, both Special Agents are convinced that the tragic loss of life of the Senator's son and three of his college friends was simply an unfortunate accident.

Some people, however, are convinced that the tragic accident could have been avoided. One of those people is Liza Jane, Special Agent Thomas's daughter, who happens to attend the same college as the dead students-and also writes for the school newspaper. Now reprimanded by their boss for allowing his daughter to stir up Senator Palmer all over again, M.K. gets the distinct feeling that Liza Jane might be on to something. Other deaths, other so-called accidents, have occurred recently, all with the same mystifying circumstances as the college student's deaths.

Now there seems to be a serial killer targeting young men and women, and M.K. and Adam are drawn into the tangled web of a killer. With no real clues where to begin their hunt for a deranged killer intent on destroying the city's youth, they end up closer and closer to danger. With Liza Jane and M.K. dragging an uncertain Adam into the investigation, the two ladies don't realize that they're being led deeper and deeper into the twisted minds of a killer unlike any they've ever faced before.

WHAT SHE CAN'T SEE is a haunting yet engaging thriller that pits two FBI Special Agents and a young woman against the twisted mind of a killer who is having trouble separating reality from fiction. Hunter Morgan has once again written a police procedural novel with underlying hints of a romantic suspense plot, and come up with a winner.

I have to say that the ending was complete surprise. You'll never guess who the killer is, and in a book of this type, that's always a sure bet that you need to keep on reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly bad
One of the silliest books I've picked up in a long long time.I could only manage to get through a quarter of it before I tossed it, but I did go to the end so I could see who the murderer was -- imagine, Dr. Wood, the female Medical Examiner, is really a hermaphrodite with a chip on his/her shoulder...
Don't waste your time or money on this piece of tripe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Thilling Read!!!
Morgan Hunter's latest effort is a page turning effort that incorporates two very strong leads with a diabolically evil killer. The end result...a strong suspense read.

M.K. Shaughnessy has just been paired up with a new partner. He's irreverent, and male. Two things M.K. has issues with.Or at least she does until she starts working with Adam.Their first case is put in their laps due to political wrangling. What seems to be one isolated case soon turns into more.M.K. thinks things seem just a tad to familiar when it comes to their new serial killing case. The victims are college students and the murders are grisly.Problem though is her partner, Adam is going to be stubborn on this and the longer he refuses to see what M.K. sees the more dangerous the killer will become. But the stakes are raised when Liza Jane, Adam's daughter starts poking into the investigation of the first case it brings the focus on her and now Liza Jane is facing danger and the chemistry between M.K. and Adam is heating up.Will M.K and Adam be able to catch this killer before the ultimate victim becomes the trophy of this unbalanced killer?

This was an amazing read.Plenty of twist and turns, one truly evil killer and two strong leads that do not over power the storyline makes this a story with reading.Hunter Morgan is a fine author and one that makes this genre her own.

5-0 out of 5 stars what she can't see
these are the best books I have read in a long time, only wish there were more, once you start you just can't stop.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT SHE CAN'T SEE by Hunter Morgan
What she can't see might be right in front of her but she can't see it because of the unexpected.Hunter Morgan is at the top of her game with WHAT SHE CAN'T SEE as she joins two opposite people, Adam Thomas, an Hawaii Five O type FBI agent who's smart but very laid back, and Special Agent M.K. Shaughnessy who does everything by the book and abhors swearing. These two clash and bash as they are on the search of a horrible serial killer.

You will love the banter between Adam and M.K.Adam is constantly teasing M.K. about what her initials stand for and M.K. is trying to get him to dress better for an FBI agent.Guess who wins?Could the two even fall in love?Oh, my, it gives me chills. The story moves at a rapid pace with tight suspense and fantastic characters that will keep you reading far into the night as you get to the amazing conclusion.Hunter Morgan is an author that keeps you guessing.I find her in league with Patricia Cornwell and Karin Slaughter.Don't miss this fine author or you will be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars was a hard to find
I thought this book was great.I read this book in one day.I was impressed to learn that this was the author's first book. When I first tried to buy this book I couldn't find a copy anywhere under twenty bucks. Now I see it starting as low as two dollars. What gives?

1-0 out of 5 stars Stupid
This is just plain Boring with a capital B and Stupid with a capital S. If this is the author's debut novel I hate to see what her next book is like. Yes it's her first novel so I really should giver her a break but this book has nothing to recomend. James is a duke and Richard is after the title and in order to do this he needs to kill James and make it look like a accident. James is sweet but thats about it. She wrote no depth to her characters at all. I found him not the least bit interesting.

And then we have Sarah the oh so boring American who has come to look for her cousin who just happens to be James's friend. Don't you love coincidences. Blah! Sarah was found in a compromising position with James very early on in the book and they then are required to get married but headstrong annoying Sarah says no. And so we go on with her living at James estate I assume to make the story more interesting but it fails to do even that.

And the villian Richard - he was not even a villian, no suspense, no excitment just a couple of hundred pages thrown together to make a stupid book with less than average characters that you care nothing about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romantic Adventure
The Duke's cousin is crazy and plots his cousin demise.James the Duke of Alvord needs to marry and produce an hire -soon. When he finds Sarah Hamilton from American in his bed he thinks all his problems are solved - or not. Great first novel - off to find more of this author.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great fun in the beginning.....
I have to say, Ms. MacKenzie has a voice. She's very entertaining and fun to read, and if she hadn't had a "ravishment" scene of the heroine by the villain, and then such a quick recovery, I would have given 6 stars if I could.I loved this book.it had so much going for it.I rarely laugh at Regencies.I was laughing at this one.And then...that incident. And such a quick recovery? the next
thing I knew she was over it?I was annoyed, disappointed and a little bit tiffed.I had to wait a long time before I rated this.It was such a 5.And then it was such a 1.In the end, I'm going with 3.I'll check out her next one.Maybe.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money, read a library copy
First book in the Naked series.

American Sarah Hamilton promises her dying father to go to her uncle, the Earl of Westbrooke, after her father dies. She goes to England, unchaperoned, to find her uncle, unaware he died a few months previously.

Sarah ends up in bed with James Runyon, Duke of Alvord. They're both naked and compromised. And Sarah's cousin Robbie, the new earl, mistakenly put them there.

James is a war hero, in the market for a wife and has an unjustified rake reputation. He instantly likes Sarah and decides to marry her.But his nasty cousin is trying to kill him to take the title. Now Sarah's in danger also.

This story was ridiculous, from the unchaperoned part to the sleeping naked part (she should have slept in her dirty clothes, for crying out loud!) to the meddlesome aunt and her friend to James - a duke! - not being able to stop his cousin - not a duke! - just to name a few of the ridiculous parts.

But the most unbelievable part was the secret James reveals to Sarah just before they're going to make love. That was a ~WHAT?!?!!!~ moment.Since this was Ms. MacKenzie's first book, I'll cut her a little slack; otherwise it would get 1 star.I felt I should read this because we chose THE NAKED MARQUIS for our reading group book for April.I sincerely hope it's better than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the finest sufi volumes
i simply recommend this collection of stories/talks. an effortless read....though more like you climb and climb with the rhythm of friedlander's words...next thing you know, you're on the top of the mountain. or the depths of the cave...or wherever it is you need to be.

breathtaking wisdom.

i totally recommend this along with other neo-classics of world-wide sufism: The Last Barrier, Living Presence, Among the Dervishes (and most anything from Octagon Press), The Essential Rumi.

5-0 out of 5 stars a box of jewels
This has been one of the most enjoyable books I have read over the past few years. I spent an evening reading the ancient tales to my parents, and for the first time in a very long time the evening became dawn without notice of time. I thank you Shems for this. The author's sincerity for the welfare of his audience is pouring out in every page. If you feel as though you are seeking a path to God, or just want to see life from a different angle, this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars INTRIGUING AND USEFEL
Very few books come by in one's life that impacts life itself. This is one of them. This truly stands amongst other fascinating books in history.

Shems Friedlander takes you on a journey from the most basic logical way of living to the most insightful understanding of the ***meaning of life*** itself. I couldn't believe my own eyes (and mind) as to how clearly and simply I was comprehending the most complex subjects of humanity, all told with many absorbing tales, delivered with a mastery of astonishing ease.

Either the author is justly a genius, waiting to be discovered by the world, or he is truly moved by God to produce such a masterpiece, or perhaps both.

In any case, if you were given a choice to read one book this year, make it "When You Hear Hoofbeats Think of a Zebra" by Shems Fridlander.

Being an author myself, I will put my entire reputation on line for this book.

Enjoy and Understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Blue Ribbons from Romance Junkies!
Diedre of the Languedoc is of a regal and noble bloodline. She is the daughter of an important priestess and finds herself obligated to search for and bring home a relic stolen years before. Diedre must find this Philosopher's Stone and return it to its rightful place in a sacred grotto.

Deidre's search leads her to Scotland on Beltane.A night of carousing and sexual freedom, it is unlike anything Deidre has ever experienced before.Wide eyed and not paying attention, Diedre is captured and held by a brutish lout intent on claiming her for the night.Despite her protests to the contrary, she finds herself praying for a knight to save her.Rescue comes in the form of the laird's son, Gilead MacOengus who vows to keep her safe. When he questions her reason for being alone, she can only hope her answers will appease him because no one can discover her true agenda; especially not a man she has just met, no matter how attractive he is.

Gilead desires to participate in Beltane but has resigned himself to doing his best to keep his lust-filled father away from the wife of an influential king.It is during this time that he sees a rather waif-like and innocent young woman fighting the advances of a huge man.Coming to her aid, Gilead promises her safety in his home though he finds himself wanting her for his very own. With invasion just around the doorstep, and a randy father to curtail, Gilead fights his attraction to Deidre. He knows she is not being completely honest with him and vows to figure out what she is hiding.

MY NOBLE KNIGHT is set in Scotland during the historical period of time in which pagan ceremonies and Beltane celebrations were still allowed.A sweeping saga, this book kept me rooted to my seat and further immersed in the story with each turn of the page.I immediately fell in love with Gilead. His physical attributes aside - which were outstanding by the way - Gilead was an honorable man and fought his attraction as chivalry demanded. His falling in love with Deidre was noble and very satisfying.I particularly enjoyed how each struggled against the attraction until they couldn?t fight any longer.

Cynthia Breeding has a great tale in MY NOBLE KNIGHT.I found it entertaining, well written, and completely captivating.Toasting this fine author, I raise my chalice high in hopes to see more of her work in the future!

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful read!
Breeding first book really caught my imagination, but in her second, she scores a bullseye. The first book was just a little too long for my tastes. This one is a learner story and moves with a strong pace.

Coming from the bloodline of Mary Magdalene, Deidre sets out on a quest to find the Philosopher's Stone.Instead of the stone she finds a special book about a place called Camelot. She falls for these knights of old in the book, and dreams of having one for her own.Still bound to find the stone, she continues her quest and gets her wish.

Yummy delight!Kensington debut line is offering some fresh talent at reasonable prices and I have found several authors that are no one my auto-buy list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet
Considering the extended and wonderful reviews posted before mine I will make this rather short.

Before purchasing this book I had never read from Cynthia Breeding, but I must say after reading I am an instant fan!

This book was a wonderfully fun read.Once I had reached the first few chapters I could not put it down.

I would recommend this book to any historical romance lover! The characters were beautifully created and finding love in the wrong time is wonderful.

Full of steamy love, and lots of enticing love triangles.I give this novel a 5 star rating and cannot wait to read another by Cynthia Breeding!

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd novel proved Breeding has staying power
The author of Camelot's Destiny is back, and with another wonderful tale of dark times.

Deidre, the daughter of a high priestess, a descendant from Mary Magdalene, sets out of the find the Philosopher's Stone. One of her precious possessions is a book about a distant time and place called Camelot. She relishes these tales, and one day hopes for a true knight of her own.She is gifted with "sight", but has no control over it and it tends to pop up when she can least afford it.When she finds herself stranded and in peril on Beltane, May Day Eve, she is rescued by Gildead MacOegnus, a handsome knight. To Deidre it's as if her dream has become a reality.

In her second book, Cynthia Breeding demonstrates she is a writer who is here to stay and makes a place on my auto-buy list. It's simply a delightful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vastly Entertaining - Love the Heroine!
When Deidre of the Languedoc, daughter of a high priestess and direct descendent from the bloodline of Mary Magdalene sets out in search of the "Philosopher's Stone", she began an adventure that would be a turning point in her life. Carrying an old book with tales of a place called Camelot where fair ladies found themselves saved by chivalrous knights of old, she becomes enchanted with the thought that perhaps, she just may discover a noble knight for herself.

Deidre has the gift of `sight' but unfortunately, no control over when, or if, it happens to show up. She only knows that she feels she's on the right path towards finding the `stone'.When her escort is captured she escapes, only to find herself alone on Beltane eve. Caught unawares and about to be raped, she is saved by the most handsome man she's ever seen - Gilead MacOengus who in her mind is a dream come true, her very own `noble knight'.

*** What a totally adventuresome and delightful read Ms. Breeding has come up with after her very original CAMELOT'S DESTINY!Keeping to much the same theme combining ancient myth with creativity and originality, she gives the reader a most entertaining and totally engrossing read.

Deidre was a delight, from the very first moment she encountered Gilead, her romantic nature envisioned him as Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad all rolled into one. Sadly, she would soon find out that the world held not only noble knights but evil villains as well.Wow, does the author come up with a real slimy villain in which the author makes him so detestable that she had me on the edge of my seat thinking how in the world Deidre could be saved. Our hero Gilead was also well defined and complex, who had his hands full in trying to protect Deidre as well as his ailing mother. He was indeed the noblest of knights with an overabundance of honor- which thankfully his passion for Deidre would overcome!

One thing I found was as the author built the sensual tension between our two younger lovers; she gives the readers an even more passionate and hotly sensualread with the secondary love affair between Gilead's father Angus and his lover Formorian - both married for duty but destined to love each other for eternity. While, not a proponent of extra-marital affairs, the author wrote this as a complex thread woven throughout, which truly surprised me with a terrific twist at the end of the story! - Sorry, my lips are sealed and you are just going to have to read this very sensually entertaining book to discover the secret of the stone, and the uniqueness of the noblest of knights.Ms. Breeding is a marvelous new talent who should be put on your auto-buy list.

Book Description
The introduction and rapid spread of the zebra mussel in North American waters has caused great concern among industrial and recreational users of these waters. This bivalve mollusk is a biofouler that attaches to any firm substrate (e.g. rocks, piers, water intake pipes, boat hulls) and has already created significant problems for raw water users such as water treatment plants and power plants. Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts and Control provides essential information regarding the biology of the zebra mussel in North America and Europe, presents case studies of environmental and industrial impacts, and outlines control strategies. Summary articles detail its life history, origins, and morphology. The book also examines techniques used to culture and maintain this organism in the laboratory. Thirty-two color plates illustrate some of the dramatic problems created by the explosive population growth of this species. Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts, and Control is an important resource for ecologists, conservationists, environmental consultants, water quality engineers, regulatory officials, power utilities, and libraries. ... Book Description
Simply Irresistible Juliet Wayborn did not hesitate to avenge her brother's beating in a London alley, especially once she discovered the perpetrator was the notorious Geoffrey Swale. When opportunity arose, she got even. But humiliating Swale in public is a sin for which there is no forgiveness. For Swale is the sort of gentleman (and she uses that term loosely) who doesn't like to lose, a man who coldly vows to challenge her every move in her determination to ruin him. A man who is proving dangerously, unthinkably...seductive.

Simply Outrageous Geoffrey Swale will not stand for being bested by the outrageous Miss Wayborn, nor accused of a crime he did not commit. If Juliet were a man, Swale would deliver a well-aimed punch...or two. But since she is quite unmistakably female, he does the next best thing. He kisses her. And then he kisses her again. Suddenly, Swale wants so much more than defeat from the woman who has openly declared war on him. He no longer cares about winning...he simply wants her surrender.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Austen fan
While reading Simply Scndalous I found myself distracted by the phrases lifted straight from the pages of Pride and Prejudice. I didn't pay too much attention at first - of course people of that period and place shared similar phrases - but the direct quotes Ms. Lejeune sprinkled liberally throughout the story (especially in the second half) became a distraction. For example, on page 206 Juliet's aunt asks her if she has received an offer of marriage, to which Juliet replies, "How could it be so when your ladyship has declared it impossible?" and then, just two short paragraphs later, we are introduced to a secondary character named Colonel Fitzwilliam, who it taking over a previously unoccupied house in the neighborhood (causing quite a stir with the residents, especially the ladies) and who brought with him a "small party of fashionable friends" from London etc. There were just too many of these "coincidental" phrases and situations to allow me to really focus on Swale and Juliet. But, where historical romances are concerned, the story was enjoyable enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air! -a madcap story full of laugh-out-loud misunderstandings
Under the assumption that Lord Swale was the one who hired ruffians to brutally attack her brother the night before his big horse race, Lady Juliet Wayborn seeks revenge. She disguises herself as her brother and enters the race -AND beats Lord Swale easily, thus embarrassing him greatly. But Lord Swale, a man of great temper, will be avenged! And by God Miss Wayborn is going to pay! But just who is going to best whom in this madcap story?

This is one funny book! A long RED-haired Viking-like ugly hero? -with a wretchedly short nose to add? And a not-so-pretty heroine who cares not one wit over her reputation and has the gall to call the hero *Ginger*? -and not affectionately I might add. He calls her ...an abominable transvestite and a mustachio'd amazon? I laughed out loud many times reading this one! The hate-turns-to-love relationship of the H/H is stretched out to the extremes. Trust me, all the name calling is really very funny and the story very lighthearted. The insults keep coming, as do all the crazy misunderstandings and there's plenty of them which make the book a real breath of fresh air amid *serious* and emotional historical romance.

And the secondary characters are a hoot too! One misunderstanding leads to another and while one character is speaking one thing the other is speaking completely of another -well, you get the idea. It could have been confusing and annoying, but Lejeuene (author) handles it well and makes the book even that more entertaining with all its strange twists and turns.

I must warn those looking for some flowery romantic novel abound with declarations of love and love scenes-there is none. Well, there is actually a love scene, but it's in keeping with the flavor of the book -a bit unexpected and not sensual in the least. This is more of a romantic comedy. Not all in comparison to the somewhat intense writings of Kleypas or Jeffries, more Sands than anything else (and thats loosely compared).

Just a funny book that was really refreshing to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and delightful!
I loved every minute of this novel. The book is filled with great characters. The hero is, as noted by other reveiwers, most unusual. Although he is not physically attractive, his personality begins to win you over, just as mens' personalities do in real relationships. The dialogue is witty and very funny. The characters are complex and varied.

I disagree with other reviewers about the sex scene. I thought it was realistic and very in keeping with both the hero's and heroine's characters and experience. Lord Swale admitted his only sexual experiences had been with paid companions. Lord Swale was bawdy by nature and his behavior was very much what you would expect from a raw, bawdy man. Juliet was totally without experience. It would have been strange for Lord Swale to suddenly change into a masterful lover of the French variety.

I too, am hoping that the next novel will be about Juliet's brother Benedict, but will be eager to read anything by this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
Great story! It is funny and pleasure to read.
Absolutely loved the scene of the father-son talk about brides.
Would love to read more of the author.

From the back cover:

Simply Irresistible

And my review:

Well, I don't know what it is about this book, but I couldn't like it. Maybe it's just me. I don't know. I normally love Regency romance (Regencies are my favorite type of historical romance), but I couldn't get past the second chapter of this book.

I felt like the author was trying to impress me with flowery speech and complicated sentences. Everything felt like it was overdescribed. I kept having to re-read lines to make sense out of them. I've read several Jane Austen books before and never had this much trouble understanding them. I pick up a book for a pleasant diversion, not to feel like I'm doing homework. I graduated from college years ago, and have no desire to do homework ever again :)

I guess I'm in the minority here, but what is so fascinating about an unattractive, not-so-smart hero? I'm not saying that he has to be the most gorgeous man on the planet (in fact, I prefer "normal people" romances to "beautiful people" ones) but saying that he basically downright ugly is a big turn-off. At least the heroine should find him somewhat attractive.

Oh well, maybe it's just me, but I can't recommend this. I guess some writers click with certain readers and don't with others. This is one that didn't click with me. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Annoying and ridiculous story
I was surprised to read the other good reviews after reading this book.I would never consider this good writing. The whole story is ridiculous. At the beginning of the book Sir Michael and Catriona are constantly fighting and getting on one's nerves but in one page they go from annoyed to stating that they were only acting annoyed because they were both madly in love with each other.I know that this is common in romances but most romances are able to pull it off with some aplomb. Usually characters have time to warm to each other. The change was too quick in this book. One minute she's annoying and he only wants her out of his life forever and the next minute she is the woman who has secretly been in love with for years.

The author also seemed to not be able to decide how old Sir Michael actually was.The book states that he is not yet 40 years old but he has two grown daughters who have been married for years and everyone is constantly referring to him as a old or part of the older generation and "of an age".A man in his 30's is hardly old. Then he constantly tells Catriona that he is old enough to be her father. The problem with this is that the book also clearly states that he is 10 years older then her.She argues that a 10 year age difference is hardly old enough to be her father.DUH!It was absurd that the only thing that he kept bringing up to her was that he was old enough to be her father when he is only 10 years older then her. This continues until almost the last page of the book.

The other absurd part of the book was her family's reaction to her meeting an old love and their assumption that she still wants to be with the man, which she does nothing to dissuade them of this notion.Catriona is bossy and never fears speaking her mind but this time she doesn't tell her father that she doesn't want to marry her old interest and wants to marry Sir Michael. She manages to get her father and family to go all the way to Scotland without telling them who she wants to marry. They assume that its the old interest and are very vocal about their assumptions. She says NOTHING which of course leads to problems.

Overall this book makes me not want to try any other Kate Huntington novels.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Pleasure!
Normally, I consider romance novels a guilty pleasure. However, this particular romance has all of the pleasure without any of the guilt. How refreshing! The story begins with Catriona being willed to neighbor Sir Michael Stewart after the distant cousin she has been taking care of passses away.Sir Michael Stewart is a widower and confirmed bachelor with two grown daughters. He eschews fashionable society and instead enjoys his farm and solitude until Catriona's arrival disturbs his peace.Catriona establishes herself as his housekeeper and is intent on keeping her promise to her late cousin. She won't leave Sir Michael's until she has made his house respectable again and helped him find a wife.To Tempt a Gentleman is filled with fast-paced, witty, acerbic dialogue.About half-way into the book the plot really begins to thicken as we discover Catriona's history and full identity. The plot may be a little bit too contrived at times, but the dialogue more than makes up for the occasional choppiness in the plot. Also, I appreciate that the author manages to convey sexual tension and chemistry without compromising moral integrity. This novel is simply a pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another fun one by Huntington
I love this author! She is so clever in her dialogue between her characters.I loved the whole story line and thoroughly enjoyed Sir Michael and Catriona. It was another one of Huntington's that I couldn't put down!I definately recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This is a great story! The characters are wonderful, and I absolutely loved Sir Michael and Catriona. The dialogue is very funny and I was curious to see what would happen as the story progressed. Very clever, very witty dialogue, interesting descriptive passages, and just a whole lot of fun! There are a lot of funny comments in this narrative; if you like words and a funny turn of phrase or description, you'll enjoy this story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Guys Liked It
I don't usually read romance, but Good With His Hands was a fun read that kept my interest and made me think twice about reading romance in the future (particularly Alexa Darin's work).I was pleasantly surprised by this first-time author.I do a lot of reading so I can be a pretty harsh critic, but I found that the characters were well developed, the plot was believable, the pace was quick, and the humor made me smile. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan on purchasing her next book, which I hope comes out soon!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Sexy!
Alexa Darin's created a combination of fun and sexy characters in her first book.Pepper Barlett search for a good man truly gave a perfect example of what some young women of today will do just to find the right even if they have to lie to themselves before they see the real thing in front of them. I just wished there had been some fmore information about Jake's past.It was kind of glossed overespecially exactly why he quit being a doctor.
This was a fun read!

4-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable book!
This book is a wonderful story about honesty and romance, love and emotions, and finding out what's really important.Ms. Darin has a light-hearted style of writing that gets you into the story, and actually caring about the various characters throughout the interweaving story lines.I cracked a smile more than a few times with some of her quips of humor and wit, and imagine that she is probably a lot like the heroine of the story.

I was expecting much less from a first time author, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!I will look forward to reading Ms. Darin's next book.I think she has a bright future as a writer, and not just in romance. Her writing style is one I would enjoy reading in any type of main stream fiction.
