    Extractions: Chapter XIII: Catholicism in its Actuality Forward Karl Adam, one of the greatest of living theologians, was born in Bavaria in 1876, one of a family of ten. He received his education at the Classical Gymnasium at Amburg; the Philosophical and Theological Seminary at Regensburg; and received his Doctorate at the University of Munich in 1904. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1900 and spent the following two years doing parish work. His scholarly and theological interests soon became apparent and it was to this field that he naturally turned. In these early years his writing was specialized and was concentrated on the history of dogma. These earlier specialized works have never been translated but have been described by scholars in the field as outstanding. In 1915 he became a professor at Munich and two years later assumed the Chair of Moral Theology at Strasbourg. In 1919 he went to the University of Tuebingen to take over the Chair of Dogmatic Theology. It was at Tuebingen that he delivered the famous lectures on the Church which brought him world-wide fame. He is also considered an outstanding authority of the theology of St. Augustine and is known for his great love for tradition and the Fathers of the Church. His eminent position in the field of theology has been recognized for many years but his unswerving fidelity to his beliefs has often led him into great difficulties. A man of great dynamic force and personality, his style captivates readers and listeners alike, but any attempt to compromise or transmute his faith results in a forceful roar of protest.

For the past year the sisters have participated in classes that include the study of the Bible and the catechism. As non-Catholics, both had to accept the authority of the Pope, the doctrine of a celibate priesthood and the requirement of confession, along with Catholic liturgy. Then, according to Catholic tradition, on the first Sunday of Lent, the bishop called them to the sacrament of initiation. They and the other new converts will be baptized at the Easter vigil and on Easter Sunday will receive their first Communion.

Historically, the differences, however, are far more numerous and quite profound. Also, in modern times, since Vatican II of thirty years ago, that major, if not tragic attempt, to "update" Roman Catholicism (e.g., the revision of canon law), the differences between Orthodoxy and the followers of the Pope have widened. In our present discussion, however, the concern will be those differences which have grown since Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism separated almost a thousand years ago. 1. Faith and Reason Following the Holy Fathers, Orthodoxy uses science and philosophy to defend and explain her Faith. It imports mainly cotton, coal, sugar, and petroleum; among its chief exports are coal, rice, flour, camphor, and tobacco. In the first ten centuries of our era we find references to the town under no less than seven distinct names, of which Fukaye no Ura (Fukaye Bay) is the best known. Its present name is probably derived from a certain Nagasaki Kotaro, who, about 1185-90, received Fukaye no Ura as his fief. Prior to the arrival of the Christian missionaries, however, Nagasaki was an insignificant village.

    Extractions: Before the Spanish colonial rule, the old Bigan had been long traded with the "Sanglay" Chinese traders for it's nice port. Ships from Macau and India also traded in Ilocos. Vigan is known for its Spanish-style brick houses and religious Mecca in North Luzon. The town was founded by Juan Salcedo, grandson of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi who founded the city of Manila. Conquistador Salcedo went to the Ilocos and established a military settlement in Vigan on June 13, 1572, which two years later, he named Villa Fernandina . When Salcedo set up Villa Fernandina near the old settlement of Vigan, he erected a small wooden chapel along the Mestizo river and later the Villa joined Vigan and grew fast as an economic, ecclesiastical and political center. An old map (1753) indicates that Vigan itself is an island and had an important strategic military value at that time.
