World Wide Web Resources The Roman Catholic Church in the U.S. is rapidly changing its demographic makeup, and the same may be said of the Episcopalian and other Churches which locate themselves within the overall western Catholic Tradition. Nearly one half of all U.S. Roman Catholics are Latinos/as, and their proportional representation will only continue to increase within the Church. Similar transformations are also occurring in other Christian (western Catholic) Churches. This demographic reality (and its profound social, pastoral and theological consequences) strongly suggests that further research into Latino/a Catholicism, broadly understood, is an urgent and necessary task. Catholic universities, precisely because of their Catholic character, are important as loci for the interdisciplinary, rigorous study of religion beyond the merely descriptive. Indeed, theological reflection on social scientific findings is an especially important and appropriate contribution of the Catholic university.

Extractions: Canonized on 15 May 1947, Nicolas of Flue , also known as Brother Klaus, hermit and mystic of Obwalden, became known to Confederates over the years as one of the noblest patriotic figures, in the fashion of a "national saint". The majority in Switzerland with over three million partisans, the Roman Catholic Church is obviously well represented in this country. The beginnings Christianity very quickly penetrated into Switzerland via the merchants and Roman soldiers. The earliest trace of Christian life in Switzerland dates back to the decline of the Roman empire: in 377, Pontius Asclepiodotus, Roman prefect of Sion, had an inscription containing the monogram of the Christ engraved on a renovated official building. From this we can deduce that the population of Sion, from the first half of the fourth century, was primarily Christian. Geneva, Martigny and Coire were the first bishoprics, but Christianization did not truly begin until the Middle Ages, due in particular to the wandering Irish and Scottish monks such as Gall, Ursicinus, Germanus, Romanus, Fintan, Pirmin and Colombanus junior.

Extractions: Avery Cardinal Dulles Among the major nations of the Western world, the United States is singular in still having the death penalty. After a fiveyear moratorium, from 1972 to 1977, capital punishment was reinstated in the United States courts. Objections to the practice have come from many quarters, including the American Catholic bishops, who have rather consistently opposed the death penalty. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops in 1980 published a predominantly negative statement on capital punishment, approved by a majority vote of those present though not by the required twothirds majority of the entire conference. Pope John Paul II has at various times expressed his opposition to the practice, as have other Catholic leaders in Europe. Some Catholics, going beyond the bishops and the Pope, maintain that the death penalty, like abortion and euthanasia, is a violation of the right to life and an unauthorized usurpation by human beings of Gods sole lordship over life and death. Did not the Declaration of Independence, they ask, describe the right to life as unalienable? While sociological and legal questions inevitably impinge upon any such reflection, I am here addressing the subject as a theologian. At this level the question has to be answered primarily in terms of revelation, as it comes to us through Scripture and tradition, interpreted with the guidance of the ecclesiastical magisterium.

I suggest that you and I are in the immediate presence of God, even without the workings of a priest. I suggest that we can communicate with God without ritualistic prayer. These pages reach out to those who continue with the Church, who attend a different church, or who have given up church entirely. The eucharist can be experienced (without its former magical connotations) if you stay with the Churchor go back to it, or go to another creedal church. Even if you don't go to any church, you are never out of touch with God.
