Attention can be regarded as the elementary beginning of consciousnessthe first degree. It is not full awareness for it is only directed one way. As I said, consciousness needs double attention. Q. What is the object of attaining this higher consciousnessto live more fully? A. One thing depends on another. If we want to have will, if we want to be free instead of being marionettes, if we want to awake, we must develop consciousness. If we realize that we are asleep and that all people are asleep, and what it means, then all the absurdities of life are explained. It is quite clear that people cannot do anything differently from what they do now if they are asleep. Q. As we are, would we ever be able to be conscious when we want to be, or does it always come accidentally? A. Nothing comes in its full state at once. The first step is to be more conscious, the second step is to be still more conscious. If, with effort, you can now make yourself be conscious for a minute, then, if you work on it and do all that is possible to help, after some time you will be able to be conscious for five minutes. Q. Is it wrong when it is accidental?

These editorial choices reflect our ongoing commitment to building a socialist country from the grassroots up. Equality of condition and democratic control over the economy, a healthy environment and public sector, and a rich culture remain intrinsic to our conception of socialism. The politics portrayed in these articles is completely at odds with the currently fashionable politics of the so-called "third way." It is this conception of the third way that dominates the thinking of those who today direct social-democratic parties and governments in Europe and Canada, of which Tony Blair's Labour government is the archetype. With some variation and qualification, the Schroeder government in Germany, the Jospin regime in France and the Olive Green Coalition in Italy have taken the same line. Provincially and nationally, Canada's New Democratic Party also pursues this path. The third way begins with the assumption that an increasingly globalized capitalist market is the framework within which nation states must operate. In this context, the primary responsibility of would-be social-democratic governments is to foster the growth, productivity and competitiveness of the national economy.

I tried to self-remember and for a short time I got into a state in which it was no longer possible to worry, and at the same time my sense of values generally changed. This state did not last long, but the problem, when it returned as one, did not again assume the importance it had before. I find it very difficult to recapture this state. A [Ouspensky]. Quite right. Continue to observe and you will find that there is a place in you where you are quiet, calm, and nothing can disturb youonly it is difficult to find the way there. But if you do it several times you will be able to remember some of the steps, and by the same steps you may come there again. Only you cannot do it after one experience, for you will not remember the way. The quiet place is not a metaphorit is a very real thing. Q. Is it the state you get to when you self-remember, because everything seems peaceful then and one really seems to be aware of oneself? A. Yes, you can take it like that.

In the traditional ways, the way of the fakir, the way of the monk or the way of the yogi, a man attempts to gain will over either his body, emotions or intellect; he is asked to give up everything at the start and retire from life. Upon entering the Fourth Way, sometimes called the way of the "sly man", a man does not give up anything in his ordinary life. He stays in life and works with all three sides of himself, his instincts, emotions and intellect; this re-aligns and balances him. As being and knowledge increase so does understanding. Seeing himself as he is, he begins to feel his contradictions, conscience is awakened, not the morality of personality, but conscience that is the same for all men. Never before known, the Fourth Way is whole and complete by itself and it is not a permanent way as the three traditional ways. Gurdjieff introduced the teaching to the West, for he said, "Unless the 'wisdom' of the East and the 'energy' of the West could be harnessed and used harmoniously, the world would be destroyed." In view of the current world situation, the attack on the World Trade Center, the subsequent Afghan war and potential war with Iraq and maybe even North Korea, this is not difficult to envision. Gurdjieff overcame many obstacles to introduce the Fourth Way teaching to the West, yet not in the way he initially

Wood gets made into things like paper products, furniture, buildings, pencils, rayon fabric, photographic film, and even food additives that end up in cheeses, cake mixes, and ice cream! Much of the wood we use for these products comes from very old trees that live in ancient rainforests. These ancient, or old growth, rainforests have been standing for hundreds and even thousands of years. They are home to millions of types of animals, plants, insects-and even people! When old growth forests get logged to make wood products for us to use, many animal species lose their home, or habitat. Sometimes these animal species become extinct, which means they disappear forever like the dinosaurs. Many native or indigenous peoples also lose their land where their families have lived for thousands of years. Some logging companies say that they replant the trees they cut. While planting trees is always a good thing to do, we must remember that planting trees in an area that's been clearcut (this means that almost every single tree in the area was cut down) is not the same as planting a forest. A forest is much more than just the trees it contains. While it is possible for a company to replant trees, it is impossible for the company to replant an ancient forest full of all the plants, animals, insects, and people that once lived there.

Extractions: Early in the twentieth century, a Greek-Armenian esoteric teacher walked out of Russia and revolution with a small group of students. His name was George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff. Eventually, he made his way to France and established a teaching center he called the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man. There, Gurdjieff taught a developmental system on personal transformation that he called the Fourth Way. In this, what he managed to do was to make metaphysical, spiritual instruction accessible to the rational scientific mind, uniting spiritual teaching from the East with the science of the West. The value of this particular accomplishment is immeasurable. Without Gurdjieff, the practical path of enlightenment called the Work may not have reached into the twentieth century western world. His formulation of this esoteric teaching made it available to the general population where previously it was only found in small exclusive groups few ever heard of. There is endless gossip about the very enigmatic Mr. Gurdjieff. About his outrageous behavior, about his intentions and moral character, and about his sources. However, there is still much more debate about the system he called the Fourth Way. There seems no end to the constant need to argue or prove the validity of the Fourth Way by way of linking it to esteemed or mysterious sources. More importantly, there seems to be no clear understanding of the subtle transformational psychological practices of the Work which is the heart and substance of the Teaching. Therefore there are constant questions about how to practice it or why do it at all or what the aim and result is. Gossip and debate will lead you nowhere in your search for meaning and Truth in the Fourth Way. Slander is as easy as idolatry. Only experiential understanding and Verification of this Teaching through the practice of it can impart its significance.
