5-0 out of 5 stars Episcopal Hymnal
Serves the purpose for which it was bought: our own copy in the home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lift every voice!
Most visitors and regular attenders of Episcopal services will find themselves juggling two books through the service -- the Book of Common Prayer, the standard bearer for Anglican liturgy and identity, and this book, the authorised Hymnal, last revised in 1982.Many denominations revise hymnals in each generation -- this one has served the church well in the past two decades, and is likely to serve for at least another decade, perhaps two.The previous Hymnal, produced in 1940,was greatly revised in the present volume; the classic English hymnal Hymns Ancient and Modern also plays a significant part in this hymnal.

There are two primary sections to the hymnal -- service music (denoted by S--- numbers), and regular hymns. There are 288 pieces in the service music section (S1 - S288); these include Glorias, Te Deums, Fraction anthems, canticles, psalm tones, chant pieces, and more for all the major liturgies -- morning prayer, evening prayer, eucharistic services, and more. There are compositions by major composers past and present (Schubert, Willan, Sowerby, Rutter, etc.), as well as pieces of various chants (plainchant, Ambrosian, etc.)

The hymns, 720 of them, are arranged first for the Daily Office use (1-46), hymns appropriate to seasons in the Church Year (Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, Ascension, Pentecost, Saints days and other occasions -- hymn 47-293), hymns for particular liturgies (baptism, eucharist, confirmation, ordination, etc.) and then a long section of general hymns (362-634).These hymns are arranged by broad theological topic -- The Trinity, Praise to God, Jesus Christ, Church, Mission, etc.The hymn section concludes with rounds and canons and some general national songs.

The collection of hymns is remarkable. There are hymns based upon scripture and psalms directly. There are hymns that come from the earliest centuries of the church, the medieval time, the Reformation, and all through the Anglican period proper. There is a generous collection of old standards and modern compositions, between Catholic standard-bearers and Evangelical and Protestant hymns. While some songs give only the melody line, this is in fact a rare thing; most include full-music scores, many even with a descant.

The book is well indexed, with lists according to composer/arranger/source, author/translator, tune names, and first lines/titles.Also, the construction of the hymnal is fairly remarkable. There are nearly a thousand pages here, but the book is not a thick volume; the pages, on the other hand, are not the obnoxious onion-skin, but rather substantial pages that stand up to years of use by many hands, as a hymnal will be used.

This hymnal is a remarkable treasure of hymns old and new, updated for modern times. It is the case that no hymnal satisfies all, even within particular denominations, and people grow remarkably attached to the hymnals with which they grew up; even with this being the case, this hymnal has achieved wide acceptance and admiration within and outside of the Episcopal church, and remains one of the major hymnals available of any denomination. ... Much of its teaching and isolated beliefs may be found in these other religions, but in one thing it is unique it alone among all the revealed religions claims that God Himself made the revelation of Himself in the Person of His Son Jesus Christ, and thereby showed men what God was like and what God wanted men to be like and that He imparts to them today the strength necessary to fulfil this purpose, if they seek it according to His will. The other religions claim that the divine revelation came through a prophet, as in. Mohammedanism, or else through some lesser god, as in the ancient Hermetic cults, but never through the Supreme God Himself. Jesus Christ, in order to perpetuate the revelation which God had made in Him, gathered about Him self a group of disciples from whom He chose an inner circle which were known as the Twelve, and later as the Apostles. At the time of His death on the cross they all deserted Him, but after His resurrection He in spired them with new hope and they went forth to 1 2 THE CHURCH S HISTORY carry to the world the Gospel, die good news about the salvation to be obtained through faith in Him. For the first hundred years or so of Christian his tory the early disciples expected the imminent return of Christ from heaven in glory to judge the world. Consequently, they made no provision for the future or the carrying on of their message beyond their own generation. The early development of the Church came as a result of its adjustment to the fact of the de layed return of Christ, Hie first Jerusalem disciples continued to worship in the Temple, forming a synagogue of the Nazarene, which differed from the other synagogues only in their belief that Jesus Christ was the Messiah predicted by the Scriptures, and that He was about to return to judge the world and to set up His Kingdom. 4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat dated, but useful nonetheless...
In many ways, this book is of a different age. While it will provide insight into the Episcopal Church, it is probably not the best introduction to the current state of affairs of the Episcopal Church in the United States.Originally published in 1935, it has various writing conventions that have been dropped (always calling the apostle Paul `St. Paul', for example) by many academic writers. This is very much a book of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer mindset; in that regard, many can find use for this book as a counter to more modern trends in the church.

The book is fairly brief, consisting of ten chapters on the following topics: History, Government, Bible, Prayer Book, Lore, Prayer Life, Moral Law, Doctrine, Sacraments, and Requirements. This was intended in many ways as a study guide for Confirmation candidates; to this end, there are several sections at the conclusion dealing with Preparation for Confirmation, a guide to Self-Evaluation, some Prayers, and a short Bibliography of Christian Classics Bernardin identifies as significant in general Christian history, such as writings by Augustine.

The book is a very practical guide in many ways - it explains various practices and liturgical pieces well.It deals with basic theological propositions such as the meaning and development of creeds, particular regular worship pieces, and general moral and governance issues in the church. It does not get bogged down too much in great detail, but doesn't skimp on the information either - rather, Bernardin set out essentially to explain the practice and the belief of the typical church for newcomers and interested but uneducated regular attenders alike.

Bernardin touches briefly on the issues of history, going back to the early church in New Testament times, following through to the Reformation, up to the present time. The development of Prayer Books over time is also briefly covered, but primarily as a means to illustrate why the current Book of Common Prayer has the shape it does.

While this would not be my first choice for an introduction to the church for the average Episcopalian or non-Episcopalian interested in learning more, it is certainly a useful guide, tending toward the more conservative side; for those for whom this orientation is important, this book will be especially welcome.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're a Christian singer, you delight in this supplement
If you haven't had a chance to hear the wonderful music in this supplement, you are in for a treat. Recently, the Nativity choir joined with other local Episcopal parishes for a sing-through of many of the songs in the supplement. What a wonderful job the committee has done in providing new praise music and some traditional overlooked spiritual gems. If you are a Christian singer, you won't want to be pass this by.

Wonder, Love, and Praise, for the most part, moves us on in time to contemporary composers and writers. Many of the hymns in the supplement contain verses with modern language and address contemporary issues.

The musical styles are also varied. Many hymns come from other Protestant traditions. But there were also chants from the Taize Community as well as some Plainsong that is being "re-presented." This supplement is a very impressive work which helps to expand our Episcopal music horizons. Appearing below is an example of the more contemporary texts from one of the hymns that we sang that Saturday.

When Jesus came to Golgatha - third verse
When Jesus cries, "Forgive them for they know not what they do,"
and still it rains the winter rain that drenches through and through;
the crowds go home and leave the streets without a soul to see,
and Jesus crouches 'gainst a wall and cries for Calvary.

The verse is very "here and now" with reference to the homeless, but it was actually written just after World War I by a British theologian, Rev. Geoffrey Studdert-Kennedy. WLP gives background notes on the hymns: "He (Studdert-Kennedy) worked tirelessly to open the eyes of the privileged to the suffering of the lower classes." And the second stanza which is not quoted herein mentions "indifference" which was a reference to the industrial slum of that time in Birmingham, England. The hymn has been re-presented with the verbs changed to the present tense to highlight the text relevance for us today.

Book Description
The wide variety of activities involved in the management of the diocese is well illustrated in this collection of over 130 official acts (and references to lost acts) issued by the six archbishops of York between 1070 and 1154.The documents illustrate details of their dealings with the
religious houses and the parish clergy: the confirmation of foundations and endowments, the appropriation of parish churches, the beginning of the process of the ordination of vicarages, and the settlement of land disputes. The acts of this period also demonstrate the attempts of the archbishops to
consolidate and extend their jurisdiction as northern metropolitan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect to be told what to do
This book describes the spiritual journeys of several people who left the Roman Catholic Church for the Episcopal Church. It seeks to teach readers about those journeys, and through that process, to provide them with some insight into why someone might become Episcopalian. The book thus teaches by example. What it does NOT do is instruct, in the sense of "you should become Episcopalian because [insert set list of reasons]."The book does NOT provide a laundry list of reasons for such a conversion, and it does not seek to justify converting to Episcopalianism on the basis of the Bible.

I think for these reasons it will be difficult for many Roman Catholics to learn much from the book.Indeed, in several of the stories the author presents, the people were disappointed that he did not simply tell them what to do or think.Instead, he encouraged them to ask questions and to reach their own decision.Let's face it:having never been encouraged to do those things in the past, many Roman Catholics will find the methodology uncomfortable and disturbing. This is not without purpose, as they would likely feel the same way about the Episcopal Church.

Therefore, the book is quite useful, very readable, and I recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Personal, and not offensive
This book was fairly helpful, and as a Roman Catholic(in transition) not very offensive, especially compared to many outlandish works such as Boettner's Roman Catholicism.
This book really brings up good points, and while reading it, I several times thought "Wow, I can really relate to that" since it is from the perspective of everyday former Roman Catholics.
And, Roman Catholicism is not the world's largest religion because it is nessicarily something great. It dominates where it was once the state-enforced religion. You don't find many Englishmen, Swedes, Lutherans, and especially Russians or Muslims flocking to Catholicism.
The book is keen to point out that these people were born into Roman Catholicism and taught there was nothing more, and I know that really does keep most Roman Catholics from ever thinking of stepping into a fine place like an Episcopal Church.
I'm glad I read the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Biblical Arguments Missing
I purchased this book as I was considering converting from the Roman Catholic Church but after reading this book I changed my mind. The stories are sincere but are often based simply on the persons views of the RC which may or may not be clearly indicative of the Church's real teachings. I was expecting a volume which like - Surprised By Truth Vol 1&2, gave the testimonials of former Protestants who became Catholic after providing detailled biblical reasons for their conversions. Which often entailled giving up lucrative ministries and careers in their former denominations.
I learned a few things about the EC but not enough to justify a conversion in good conscience.

2-0 out of 5 stars incomplete
I am a former Roman Catholic who converted to the Episcopal Church. I must say that I was surprised that an Episcopal priest would write such a negative book about someone else's religion. The overall sense you get is that Catholicism is rule bound, boring, herd-like, to the extent that many RCs are driven to the Episcopal Church. Well, much of this may be true of many Catholic parishes, but certainly not all. There is a certain self-congratulatory smugness here about the Episcopal Church that I find extremely distasteful. Obviously if you are going to interview a bunch of people who decided to convert to your religion, you are going to get a lot of negative views about the religion they came from. The happy RCs aren't going to be much in evidence in this book. My problem with this book isn't so much in the way it was written, as in the incomplete picture it gives of RC, since it is a negative one, and the poor taste of the author. I have heard a lot of people say that Catholics are taught to look down on other denominations, but I must say that I hear a lot more complaining about the "Romans" as an Episcopalian, than I ever heard negatives said about Protestants when I was a Catholic.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting subject matter; bad presentation
This is a poorly written book on a very topical subject. Being born and raised Roman Catholic in America, I'm well aware of the personal struggles faced by Roman Catholics who are torn between institutional Catholicism as preached by the Vatican and personal Catholicism as espoused by the majority of Roman Catholic parishes in America.

This book tries to paint the Roman Catholic Church in broad brushstrokes as dogmatic and overbearing, and quite frankly I would agree that the upper echelons of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, especially under the restrictive policies of Paul VII and John Paul II, are all that and more. However, what this book fails to address--which is a typical mistake of the proverbial outsider looking in--is that the Roman Catholic Church in America has survived in direct proportion to the independence its parishes and pastors are given. The Church survives because most priests are left alone by the Vatican to address the individual needs of their parishoners. And within the context of this relationship, an inverted pyramid of power has slowly supplanted the former pyramidial hierarchy that placed the Holy See at the top. The "Vicar of Christ" has become more of a symbolic figurehead, and we as Roman Catholics--AMERICAN Catholics--will admit to as much if you back us into a corner.

Ultimately, if the message this book preaches was really all that attractive, then a pragmatism-first-Christianity-second "Catholic light" religion like Episcopalianism would be the rule rather than the exception, and Roman Catholicism wouldn't be the single largest Christian denomination on the globe. And this is coming from a complete pro-birth control, pro-choice, gay-friendly left winger who thinks priests should be allowed to marry and that women should be allowed in the priesthood, so don't start throwing the labels on me. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The Nineteenth Century Prayer Book
The history of the editing and publication of the Book of Common Prayer is both fascinating and controversial. This prayer book was published in the in the Eighteenth Century. It was wonderful that the University of Michigan Library preserved this book and released a facsimilie edition. In structure and format, this book doesn't divert significantly from the English prayer book of 1662.The King James Version is the translation used in both books. What is different in this volume are the several American rituals (such as "The Thanksgiving of Women after Child-birth," "Forms of Prayer to be Used at Sea," and "A Form of Prayer for the Visitation of Prisoners.")The two books are a good comparison of the similarities and differences between the expression of the Christian faith in the rites of the church in America and England. This a good volume to add to one's collection of prayer books.

A HISTORY.. Qg. TJEie...... AMERICAN CHURCH BY THE REVEREND WILLIAM WILSON MANROSS, M, A. FALLOW AND TUTOR OF TK OKNURAL TIIKOLOOICAL SEMINARY MOREHOUSE PUBLISHING CO. NI. W YORK MILWAUKEE COPYRIGHT, 1935, BY MOREHOUSE PUBLISHING CO. MILWAUKEE, Wii. Tfa Haddm Gr ftt t 1m, t Cam m, N, j, To THE REV. FRANK STANTON BURNS GAVIN, TH. D. AND TEACHK PREFACE T JLHE AIM o this history is to show the American Episcopal Church as a living institution, and to supply a connected nar rative o its development, both internally and in its relations with the society in which it is situated. Such an object neces sarily involves some lessening o the emphasis placed upon dramatic incidents and striking personalities, but I hope that the inherent interest of the Churchs story, which I have endeavored to bring out as fully as possible, will more than compensate for this loss, if it is a loss. As to sources, I have relied rather extensively upon secondary authorities in preparing chapters one, two, and eight, and for a few details elsewhere. Otherwise, the history has been based entirely upon a study of original sources, though in this class I include a large number of contemporary biographies which are not primary sources in the technical sense, but which generally represent the nearest approach that can now be made to their subjects. The excuse for using secondary sources in the chapters mentioned is that they deal with subjects which have been ex haustively treated by previous historians, and it seemed advisable to devote the time available for research to an investigation of the extensive portions of the history where a fresh approach appeared to be necessary. Parts of chapter nine are based on a sketch of Bishop White which I prepared for the Bishop White Prayer Book Society while already engaged in the present work, but that sketch was the result of a careful study of all the available sources. The secondary sources to which I am most indebted are W. S. Perrys The History of the American Episcopal Church., Volume I, for the first part of chapter one and for most of the material in chapter two which was not taken from William Bradfords His tory of Plymouth Plantation or John Winthrops Journal, F. L. Hawkss Contributions to the Ecclesiastical History of the United States Volume I, for the portion of chapter one dealing with vii VU1 PREFACE Virginia and A. L. Crosss Anglican Episcopate and the American Colonies for chapter eight. All other secondary works consulted, together with a portion of the original sources, are listed in the bibliography. Acknowledgments are due to Professor Frank Gavin of The General Theological Seminary, without whose advice and en couragement the work would never have been undertaken to JDr. Lewis C. Washburn of Christ Church, Philadelphia, the librarians of General Seminary, the New York Historical Society, and the Wisconsin State Historical Society for their courteous co operation, especially in permitting the use of valuable manuscripts to Professor H. C. Robbins of The General Theological Sem inary, who has kindly read over the later chapters of the book and offered many helpful suggestions to Miss Mary Beattie Brady of the Religious Motion Picture Foundation, Mr. F. L. Olmsted of the General Convention Committee of the Diocese of New Jersey, The Spirit of Missions, and Mr. Alexander B. Andrews of Raleigh, N. C., for friendly assistance in obtaining illustrations and to my friend, Miss Catharine Wisner, for invaluable assistance in reading proofs. WILLIAM W. MANROSS October, 1935.
